Gigabyte EP45 Extreme board exposed
TweakTown was given the opportunity to be the first publication in the world to see and photograph Gigabyte’s upcoming motherboard targeting extreme overclockers, the EP45 Extreme. This board will be quite different to the rest of Gigabyte’s P45 based motherboard and the board we were shown was the first board off the production line and as such, is a very early sample. The most obvious feature of this motherboard is the humongous heatsink sitting above the first PCI slot. This is based on a similar construction idea to Gigabyte’s passive Silent-Pipe 3 and works the natural convection method and draws hot air out of the case without any noise.
In saying that, Gigabyte isn’t really intending for this motherboard to go into a case, as there will be a fairly limited run of these boards. The EP45 Extreme is Gigabyte’s answer to the Foxconn Black Ops board, although with a different chipset and as such is intended for bench use. This is why Gigabyte is planning to supply a LN2 duct for the CPU and a watercooling module for the chipset. The large heatsink can be removed, as it is secured with four screws on the top of the chipset cooler. This is partly done to make it easier to ship and transport the board, but also to allow for the watercooling module to be attached in an easy way.

As a concept...it's cool, but hardly practical. The PCB layout is, strange to say the least. But as they say it's intended for benching etc.
EP45-DQ6 for me.

Anything about P45 TDP yet? That chipset cooling is kind of alarming...
Obsolescence be thy name
This air crap is annoying.
I am glad gigabyte is planning on WCing for the NB.
I hope that all of this extreme OCing gear will really see a bright future when LGA1366 is release.
Still amazing just to look at! COPPER!!!!!
You must [not] advance.

it looks removable
that's good for possible compatibility issues fitting in some cases i guess
i look forward to that DQ6 board to give me DDR3 RAM hell!!!!hahaha
Dino, it clearly says removable in both my post and tweaktowns article. :P
This board is targetted squarely at us extreme benchers who are most likely to be using phase or pots on a benchtop.
The BIOS which a few people will be reviewing next week is supposedly insanely full of options and (finally) every voltage readout you could possibly want.
I'll find out ASAP if there will be a DDR3 version, i'll be bitterly dissapointed if not.
where's that sexy time photo when you need it....

that's funny, sort of.
im still worried that the nb will be too hot...![]()

Can someone PLEASE get a pic of the EP45-DQ6...will she differ much to the DS5 version?, based on previous boards, not that much....save for being 12 phase, still wanna see some pics!

So what's the word on heatoutput on the P45 chipset ? same level as X38 ? Cooling device looks cool but if that's real copper that's gonna be a heavy mofo of a mobo... good they've foreseen a connection to screw it onto the case... now if they added a watercooling block too in the box this is a definite buy for me...
Question : Why do some overclockers switch into d*ckmode when money is involved
Remark : They call me Pro AsusSaaya yupp, I agree
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...-0,1915-5.htmlEight PCI Express 2.0 lanes equal the performance of x16 PCI Express 1.1, providing 4 GB/s upstream and 4 GB/s downstream bandwidth to and from the graphics board.
looks like even pci-e 2.0 8X hinders ONE 9800GX2The dual GPU GeForce 9800 GX2 card requires at least x8 PCI Express 2.0 to deliver high frame rates. Going to x4 link mode clearly bottlenecks the graphics flagship.
