Just came back from AFK...RAD positions are clever and Spot On CD...can't wait to see tubing routes...waddaya think about paint colors guys...internal will be matte black...leaning towards the black/red family; shows off lighting best IMO...

Cool update: the special rivets and high strength Rivet gun arrived while I was out of town so I am going to be ready to take apart the chassis tomorrow. Unfortunately it's not painting weather right now: rain and cold.

But I can prep the parts and have them ready to squirt.

Well i didn't want to post on XS until I was able to start posting my build log (why not enter with a bang?)

So anyways Cyber, why not use a 140mm fan on the PA160?
It would allow the shroud to be much smaller, and not jet into the case awkwardly.
Just a suggestion mind you, don't want to step on the mighty CD's shoes.

Well the 140mm fans are pretty good that I got from Petras (Yate Loon) so that's a good idea. I just have so many PA 160 shrouds it was an easy solution...but further down the line I might make up a shroud for a 140.

A quick preface: the chassis is complex...meaning lots of areas to paint/coat and before I took it to pieces I needed to get some special rivets that mount flush. And of course I needed to document the process.

Before I took the chassis to pieces I wanted to see how much removing the HDD mounts would effect the structure. This area could be better used for pumps and to showcase the Raptor X HDDs...no need for the HDD mounts at all...

Part of what I enjoy about taking things apart is seeing the thought some designers put into it. The Cosmos is etremely well made. Every part keys together with a specific combination of rivet hole and detent. It's virtually impossible to put it together wrong...if you are paying attention.


Here's another HDD mount that I can remove...it reveals a 90mm grill! Perfect. I need to vent the PA160 upward...and this will do it.




Something like this will allow me to keep the structure intact and still p;romote an exhaust "breeze" for the PA160. The WD 400GB HDD will mount on Scythe AntiVibration Mounts directly above and catch the cooling..win win.


The retainer mechanism is a sliding rail that has a number of parts..


A small spring...9 times out of ten these are the things that go flying across the room right?


I used the knife to gently pry the rail over it's detent to slide it free...


The only part that gets pain is the outer part of the rail assembly.

Anyway you look at it that's a lot of surface area.

It's not the powdercoating service that is expensive: it's me taking the case apart, putting it back together and the time involved.

For something simple like this which is just satin black I got lucky: the place is doing a bunch of parts so doing mine with them is expedient.

There are literally thousands of colors to choose from...and textures. Everything you can imagine really.

Some of the nicer finishes are three coats: base, color, clear...so they are triple the cost in material.

Add to that the interesting colors that need to be ordered in are an extra expense....then triple that extra expense for the process.

Sooo this particular job is not too expensive...and beat painting them.

But for a really custom coat it might be cheaper to paint...

Got the parts back this AM and they are perfect. I am loving it...super fast turnaround, excellent workmanship...I'll be sending them all of my powdercoating work from now on.

Putting the case together this PM and will be posting some shots of the glorious satin black (color code: Cascade) chassis.

I'm getting a 'Ferrari Red' Cosmos tomorrow (for £50!) and because the Tubby Custard Machine (named after the pink coolant mix I use) needs a bigger home (can't fit my Meanwell clone TEC PSU), the red goes nicely with the sofas in our living room, the wife approves and gave me the retro idea and a Cosmos 1000 for £50 is a bargain.

I'm planning to do a Retro-Futurist make over incorporating analogue dials, shiny polished copper cooling pipes with glass view ports, blood red fluid.

One major mod I plan to do to the case is to cut access holes in the motherboard tray behind ti CPU, VRMs, Northbridge & Southbridge. Will this have a negative impact on EMI (received or transmitted) or structural integritty?
