Well they must do something with it or they wouldn't have two deadlines and especially giving full points when missing the first deadline.
So it's wasting cycles but I wonder how much they care about it. The points are a way of telling how important something is.

Which is why you afaik don't get full credit if you miss a preferred deadline.

Edit: not to mention I don't really care about points, more about the scientific work/value

The faq might be outdated but as for as I remember this has always been there. Or I'm understanding teh word "stats credit" wrong.
Are there any limits to how long my machine can take to finish a work unit (WU)? Yes. Depending on the work unit, unfinished work units for most projects "expire" and are reassigned to new machines. Since new WUs are generated by finishing old ones, we must keep things moving along by expiring units. As we move to longer WUs we will extend this time as needed. Expirations vary on the order of a week to a few weeks, depending on the nature of the WU. You will get stats credit for all units that you complete, even if they have expired, but they will not be as useful scientifically.
And I care alot about my points. I have no fricking idea which project is more helpfull for them and the only thing telling me is the points they give.
Without those points they would also lose a huge amount of extreme folders. They'd lose me for sure over other scientific DC's where I can help as much and with the extra of friendly competition.

You get credited for EUE's, but you don't recieve full credit when you pass the preferred deadline.

If the client were to exceed the Final deadline of a WU, the client will discard the partially completed WU and download a new WU. No credit will be awarded.

And I understand the idea of the points being important motivation and guidance. But if you read up about the project then you will know the fastest turn around times are always prefered for the most scientific value afaik.

umm what you quoted says you get full credit when submitted before the final deadline, so if you pass the preferred but get it turned in before the final you get full credit...

Oops did I write that post?

Can't edit it anymore, since you quoted it already lol. Wel shame on me.

What I ment to say was that yes you get the credit but it's clearly said you don't do the project the best service. I got confuzed with the EUE's being awarded points based on how far they where already I guess. Shouldn't post in a hurry

    Me too, me too...

AFAIK... full credits between deadlines before final. Scientific value diminishes there when one cpu has to fold the same wu that was almost folded by an another cpu, simple... in the contrary that the other cpu could have been folded totally fresh and fruitful work unit

[ot]Well that is my principal #1 at my work. Since I hate to do things twice, do it right at the first place. How many times do you think I succeed in that [/ot]

But if wu returned back to stanford servers before final deadline it is then being credited though, yet not cool way run to f@h

So I know why you, MTM, would think mainly about pref. deadline

Well we all know it gets passed to another client, so cycles are wasted in our eyes. They also state that but either they don't have the system to give people less credits/no credits or they really value it as much. For instance to compare results afterwards.
I'm sure everyone sends in faulty WU's from time to time. It's almost impossible for a CPU to have no errors when it's running 100% 24/7. And especially with the SMP and the rather unstable MPI. We all know how delicate the MPI is running under Windows.
Damn I wish they'd make their stuff open source so wouldn't have to guess all the time and could really optimise our machines to it. If they fear safety of the program they are making the program wrong anyway.

Iirc they feared they would loose allot off participants if they credited people less for those late units. Don't think their right but who am I

Imo most people do fah not for points, but maybe I'm to convinced of people's good intentions

Btw, the new smp beta does not use MPI anymore. Maybe your whish about more open source coding involved in the project will come true as I think that's the way they been going with both the new smp and the new cal gpu client.

Idk about faulty wu's, the client should EUE then ( if that's what you mean with faulty wu's, some wu's are supposed to EUE so you're right ). And the 24/7 stability besides the science is the biggest drive for allot of people, epeen ftw Had months on the smp without a EUE or anything, infact that was with the very first beta it went downhill for me from then on, though the current one ( I'm still on 5.91 going from memory ) been pretty nice to.

On a separate note, I got a 3065 WU yesterday. It's got a 24hr preferred deadline. This thing is taking my main rig something like 27 hours to crunch! OWWWWW! This isn't a slow rig, but...

Hey, remind me - is anyone running dual SMP on C2D chips?

If you care for the project you wouldn't even ask.

SMP on dual core no problem but trying to double that? Remember that if you don't return the wu before the preferred deadline you're hurting the science since you will let someone else process the exact same wu?

On another note, nice to hear about your tax returns
