    run dxdiag

guide to make it run like WS http://www.win2008workstation.com/wordpress/

the sidebar part is not the best, I have better procedure.(will post tomorow)

people this OS and vista sp1 have the same code base, if it run on vista will run on 2008.
the only problem are the setups that check the os version.(that can be fixed too)

W2K8 x64 became my main OS on Friday evening. I tried the Vista experience thrice and each time was more disappointing than the last so when I read about using W2K8 as a workstation I was naturally skeptical but from the first boot I've been in love.

Sure, the load time is longer than XP, which is to be expected in a server OS but I've had no issues installing any of my daily apps or games.
I'm using a licensed version, tried the evaluation earlier in VMWare but the trial wouldn't let me install A.D. so I bit the bullet and just activated the sucker.

The largest difference for me has to be the lack of lag. Vista always gave me lag opening my attached hdd's and samba shares but I'm not experiencing any of that now. I should mention that I'm only running 2GB ram, W2K8 has no issues here, Vista would cry like a baby..

I finally found a replacement for XP.

Now, if only that extra 2x2GB will arrive..
    No rig right now.

not crazy as such, just slows things down a little

    the manual states:
You may install varying memory sizes in Channel A and Channel B. The system maps the total size of the lower-sized channel for dual channel configuration. Any excess memory from the higher-sized channel is then mapped for single channel operation

same thing is mentioned in the manual for the P5B Deluxe too

Quick question. What is the preferable version of Server 2008? Standard, Enterprise or Datacenter? I would assume Datacenter?

Like would there be speed differences between the versions, or limitations on the lower ones or something?

enterprise already support fail over clusters.

to buy check what you need, there is a BIG diference in price from standard to enterprice.

I dont see the need for enterprise, I am running server 08 x32 standard on my 1200MHz Celeron rig with 1GB of RAM and it runs great. I like it.

I know people cracked vista rc1 to work indefinitely, is there anything like that for server08?

Hmm... I don't understand why is datacenter more expensive, when it supports the most features? Compare the technical features here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserv...are-specs.aspx

Datacenter has all of those of enterprise and then some. Was that just a typo, with it having the cheaper price?

Anyway price aside, it does not matter to me. Which would technically be the best one to get and offer the best performance?

Took windows 2008 server enterprise for a test run, based on preliminary impressions, I could hardly detect a difference between it and a "tweaked out" pre sp1 x64 vista ultimate in terms of responsiveness, except in boot times speed where the former took several seconds less time to load from progress bar to desktop. Was able to get the same effect after tweaking the prefetcher and superfetch settings in vista.

Am tempted though to do a clean setup for both and do a pcmark vantage comparison run just to get a more conclusive idea of general performance difference between the two, but lazy to go through all the setup

I know people cracked vista rc1 to work indefinitely, is there anything like that for server08?
For now, I don't think there's a working time stop nor bios emulation to prevent activation indefinitely.

We have 240 days ahead, after that. Format the partition, reinstall and more 240 days.

only issue is some uncontrollable pop up windows occasionally pop up during benches from previous eval versions

kinda annoying when you're doing a fast 32M run lol

a normal exe can be fooled using the compatibility mode.

the msi installer cant be fooled so easily, you need to edit the msi pacage requiremts whit some msi related tools.

some msi only have a compressed .exe, you can install and then on the first error you do not click cancel and you go to the temp folder to get the real installer....
