I have never been an nVidia 'fanboy', and now this whole 9800 flop has turned me off completely. I hope ATI manages to come in and mop up this mess. I hope that's not wishful thinking![]()

OK, so it's not a next gen GPU as the name implies, but it's hardly a POS card.
The fact is that it beats the 8800GTX whilst costing less, running cooler and overclocking much better.
Keep it in perspective people! If this card was named a 8900GTX I bet nobody would have anything to complain about.![]()
no buy for me
The reason people do not like this card is that it could have been soo much better, but Nvidia, acting upon its own interest, kept it back. They did not want it to encroach on the GX2. Kinda reminds me of the Top Gear segment on the Porsche Cayman where it was obvious that while good, it was purposely held back to keep it from encroaching on 911 territory.
Companies do this all the time as its logical, but people still resent it. Seeing how many gung ho fans there are of the big ugly 9800GX2, the backlash to the 9800GTX was predictable.
this card should be called the 9600GTS sell for $180 and they should have a 9800GTX which is twice as powerful.
It was either upgrade my gpu's, or 780i/DDR2 -> 790i ultra/DDR3.
I'm liking my 2x8800gtx's, so it's 780i/DDR2 -> 790i ultra/DDR3!!!

Not yet, but the 8800GTX is disappearing at more and more shops (probably the cause of the low prices).

Cmon what did you people expect out of this card really or do you completely ignore leaked specs and hope for some magical numbers once it's launched?G92 with very similiar specs to 8800GTS 512MB, if anything it performed slightly better than my expectations. It's not until GT200 chip is released NVIDIA will raise it's performance bar significantly.
Still a decent price/performance ratio though.
But damn I wish I hadn't went to that geizhals site to check out nowadays G92 prices, Leadtek 8800GTS 512MB 190 EUR? WTF I paid 221 EUR for my 8800GT not that long ago. ><

Why does it have dual 6-pin power connectors when G92 8800GTS need only one?!?!? And not much improvement in performance...Does this tell something about overclocking abilities...........

I dont understand how these reviews so far have the G92 GTS beating the 8800GTX. In the tests I did @ 1680x1050 the 8800GTX easy beat out the G92 GTS with or without AA in every game except 3D06. So I would have expected the 8800GTX to beat the 9800GTX.

That's exactly the point though, it should be called the 8900gtx, its performance is at that point, kinda like 7800gtx vs 7900gtx
9800gtx is completely misleading and points at a new generation when it is not, that's one reason why some people were kinda upset the rv670 was called 3870 when it didn't offer much beyond a die shrink
That's Marketing mate, the 8600 cards were also totally hopeless yet they sold like hot dogs giving inferior performance to the older 79xx range... but peeps that are not really into it buy the bigger name as it's more recent...
I can't blame Nvidia for this they are here to make money not satisfy our hunger for 2Ghz GPU's or 2500mhz shaders...
If ya want a better card skip some generations and endure maybe some lower detail during half year and then make a big stepup... it wouldn't be wise for Nvidia now that ATI had released it's X2 to not respond... peeps are blinded by 3dmark nr's and co and like to show off hardware...
It's simple and clear : we are all kids that like new toys, only our hobby is pretty expensive compare to the kiddo's Duplo![]()
And I said it before if the card retails at around 400 dollars , about 350 euro's I will advise peeps to buy one as it's a great card with top notch performance... not the increase we expected but that's due to the fact Fudzilla and the Inq are constantly making peeps dream about ridicilous specs... and I payed way more for my 8800GTX and I didn't mind then either...![]()
And in the Nvdia camp we got some great hardware 9600GT 8800GT 8800GTS512 and now 9800GTX which are all inside many peeps budgets... Same for ATI range... and on a note this release will influence prices on 8800GTS 521 and GT cards... too bad Belgium is always pretty late with availability...
All about cash !!

Question : Why do some overclockers switch into d*ckmode when money is involved
Remark : They call me Pro AsusSaaya yupp, I agree
People should stop comparing the 9800GTX to the 512 8800GTS. It's getting really pathetic.
There are other cards in the market.
I bought a 8800GTS 320 last year. The new 9800 will be a great upgrade.
Less heat, more speed, better OC.
If it really is the same there shouldn't be a 2nd power connector...
I see it more like a high binned 8800GTS GPU with a new PCB prolly and better ram allowing for higher clocks... also if the suggested MSRP is correct it's about the same as we would have payed for the 8800GTS 512 when it was launched... if Nvidia launched this card at original 8800GTX prices I would have had a problem with it...
I admit the name is misleading ( good marketing job ) it's not 100% new technology but at least we will be sure it will perform and at that price it's a steal... And many peeps don't OC their cards they just run them stock out of the box...

Yeah it'll be a great upgrade, I just made it.
I bought an 8800gts 512.
They're essentially the same card, so it's a perfectly legitimate comparison. The 9800gtx is just the 8800gts with a few things it always should've had, rebaged and with a heftier price tag. The 9800gtx is essentially to the 8800gts 512 as the ultra was to the GTX, although in this case we do have A FEW actual hardware changes (not that they do much...).
If you really want to upgrade, buy an 8800gts 512 from one of the idiots who sells it to buy this. Unless the slight changes provide some kind of yet unseen massive overclocking potential then this card is just a useless interim card to fill a space in the market.
Not trying to flame Nvidia here, they have no reason to push new hardware. They can hold onto new cards for quite a while because of the slow market, don't think they haven't beaten the GTX because they can't... they simply haven't needed to. They seem to be pushing for lower prices & better driver support for multi-gpu solutions, by putting more time into R&D before releases... which is FINE by me.

ForceWare 174.20 updates 9800GTX Performances!
3DMark03 score has jumped up from 39k to 54k.
I also notice that 9800GTX is a super clockable card. It has been clocked to 900/1269(2540)/2250MHz (CORE/RAM/SHADER)

If we see this increase Also in Games , WIndows Vista and with 9800GX2 will be very good news .

Nice increase, but we want game tests, not 3DMark that is telling us that Nvidia is only working on scores in a bench in their drivers!
