First of all, we already have fast GDDR4 ( and GDDR5 ) RAM that can give us more than the "required" bandwidth combined with a 384BIT BUS.
It also costs a lot in transistor count.
384BIT and faster RAM = cheaper, efficient, and easier to manufacture.

I highly doubt the 9800GTX will be priced under $350, $399 sound much more likely.
Seriously. I can see $419 as being the realistic price. And, if they go out of stock due to a *possible* high demand, the price will get jacked up even higher.

I will wait before trying to deduce more conclusions.

Well, the g92 prices are dropping, 8800GTS is under $250, and $8800GT is under $200

So $300 for 9800GTX 512MB isn't thaay bad, bute $280 would be better.
and $330 for the 1gb version
    and $400 for the 2gb

    i say

IMO to be a genuine upgrade from the 8800GT 512MB, you need to go for a 1GB card. Otherwise, with the 9 series you are just getting more of the same card you already bought before.

    this is refreshing to see
low price offer from nvidia >> LOL!!!!

i think they are seriously trying to sell the idea of tripple SLI this time round

but no matter what ppl would complain

now i personally haven't looked at the GFX card slides yet so can't comment on the pricing but if the price is correct and we start buying these for $300 you are going to buy a monster powerhouse tripple SLI GFX setup for $900 (GFXs only)

now we all know how much Ultras used to cost and their pricing didn't really change a hack of a lot)

that sounds pretty bloody good to me.

but i'm no gamer. i don't give a really. my 8800GT is great for my rig in all honestly and will serve me well for many many years to come i'm sure

i hate the idea of having a such a power hungry system though ......tripple SLI or quad SLI, quad core, lots of drives >> where does it end

look on the bright side guys, at least it has a black PCB

seriously though, i don't might this all at since i'm still on a X1900XT256, i always wanted to own a GTX. but i do agree with you most of you about how this "new" card isn't really new at all.

In a sense, nomatter how you spin it, this card with its 256-bit bus is a downgrade to the 8800GTX. All the OC'ing in the world does not save the bottom line(stock performance) and also does not save those instances where the 9800GTX's performance takes a nosedive in the face of G80 thanks to its narrow bus. Nvidia knows this, as I've said a billion farking times the reason is the GX2; a 384-bit 9800GTX would take one nasty hack at the GX2's purpose and sellability.
Even without OC'ing the G92 wins.

G80 wins only with clock for clock.

    bus size doesn't matter
    memory performance does.
if this uses fast enough RAM it won't matter.

if the clock speed of the RAM was increased by 50% and the bus width was decreased by 33%(which is the case here) then it shouldn't matter.

data transferred = frequency of transfers * size of transfers

    LOL?

So much for the best and latest games optimized for quad core, gain from 2>3>4 cores, nV marketing just tried crashing that belief in one shot right there... don't waste your cash on a $1k CPU, buy a $300 GPU and get much better gaming perf.

What's better, the games they list as having no to negligible C2D 2.67G>Yorkfield 3G improvement includes: Lost Planet, World in Conflict, Company of Heroes, Call of Duty 4, Crysis, Unreal Tournament 3, Bioshock, Oblivion... they really didn't spare anything which has been mythed over.

I would love to put to test this presentation through its paces, if I could be bothered enough or had the demand to.

On another note, nV has pretty much stalled since G80GTX in November '06, which was a ground shattering technology for it's time, albeit monstrously expensive... but $300, if true, then I welcome very much.

$299 actually sounds right for this card. It's basically just a higher binned 8800GTS G92, the G92 cost like $200-250 right now, so another $50 on top of that is fair for a higher end product. They still have the 9800GX2 for their flagship.
