Radeon HD 4000 series - new inofficial info

german site Hartware.net has postet some specs of the upcoming generation of ATI cards.

they got this info from an anonymous reader so take it with a grain of salt. however it's from images of an "authentic looking presentation".

    more here: Google Translate link

4850 and 4870 are still based on the 55nm process. The Memory Interface will stay at 256Bit and the ROPs at 16. The number of Stream Processors will increase by 50% to 480 and the number of Texture Mapping Units will be doubled to 32. when idling the 4870 is supposed to draw less than 10w of power.

the new high end model R700XT, or 4870X2 will be similar to the 3870X2. Still a 2x256MBit Memory Bus but now with GDDR5 Memory. just like the 3870X2 its gonna have lower memory clocks compared to the single 4870 version but it has a whooping 250W TDP much like the rumored spec of the 9800GX2.

    Memory sizes are: 4850 512MB, 4870 1GB, 4870x2 2GB ... all GDDR5

what do you mean on the 4870x2?

There isn't that much wrong with ATi staying 256-bit. since its not going to bottleneck the card that much. Plus I don't think these are going to be final specs.

    Agreed.
I feel that while these are most probably faked, the real specs wont be much different

    Cheap and higher is unecessary.
4670 next to 3870 in GFlops? that sounds too much, but i like it

Even if those specs are not real, I really like:

    - 10w idle power consumption, that is just
    - 1GB frame buffer. Most folks only looks at frame rates when they compare a 512MB vs 1024MB, and that's not all. 1024MB is not really needed to maintain a good fps rate, but they are necessary to load the HUGE textures of todays games (let alone upcoming ones) so in certain parts of the levels the card doesn't need to load textures from system memory when you are looking around a wide area.

The 512bit bus is not really needed IMO, R600 and derivatives have shown that it's not needed with this architecture. 512bit+GDDR5 would be totally overkill and innecessary.

And even if its shaders are the same of R600, 480 of them will boost perfomance. But I don't think they are exactly the same though.

FINALLY, more Texture units! About damn time, been at 16 since X800XT......

gonna be amazing if they keep the price down like how the 3850/3870 and 3870x2 are setup now. If it OCs as well as the RV670 with some volts, 1GHz core at those specs look pretty nice

if DDR5 speeds pan out to what they are supposed to be, 512bit is a tad unnesseary imo

Why would there be a X2 model then their architecture already is multicore? Probably fake.

Because the highend is multicore, the rv770 will be the "performance" card which will probably be the 4870, the dual r700 (whatever it is) card will be the actual "high end" card

wait, draw only 10w of power when idle? that would be incredible if all their information is true
i'm anxious to see what amd has up their sleeves regardless of the specs being accurate or not

I've already heard that one, the caveat is that it's technically in standby mode at idle with the IGP taking taking over on the new chipsets. We'll see what it really is on older chipsets when it hits.

Woah there dimiri. Don't get too hopeful there.
<eMesreveR>Do "girls" ever appear outside the Internet? Can i randomly encounter them?
<Aleph-One>I believe they are a fabrication. Most of the evidence would suggest that they were created in a studio during the Cold War to display our industrial superiority over the Soviet Union.

Not bad but those GPU frequencies are insanely high.. I hope these cores can hit 1500+MHz at sub-LN2 temps.

Since when does a new mid range card beat last gens high end stuff? Does I don't see a 36xx thrashing a 2900xx anywhere do you?

A 3850 is well priced but is the same core as a 3870 after all. Not really a good comparison.

Considering the 9600gt drops into that spot it does seem weak. I hope these specs are wrong or the SPs on these cards are somehow better. The former is probably closer to the truth.

3xxx series is just refresh of 2xxx series. It isn't "new" gen card. Neither does 9600GT.

like Miwo said, if the GDDR5 memory is clocked so high, then the bandwith will be completely sufficient at 256Bits.

keep in mind that a 256Bit bus clocked at 2000mhz is just as fast as a 512Bit bus at 1000mhz

thats also the reason why the new 8800GTS 512MB has about the same memory bandwidth as the old 8800GTS 640MB. 256Bit @ 1000MHz = 320Bit @ 800MHz. the new one has almost 25% higher clock speeds (970MHz), whereas the old one has a 25% wider bus.

the 3870 also is multicore. it has 320 parallel stream processors.

the only point of an x2 card is to reduce costs. if you pack all the transistors on one chip you get a really huge die and most likely not very good yiels. the pcb layout would also be more difficult. you'd have to use a large memory bus (i.e. 512bit) and get all those lanes to one spot on the card. that would require more pcb layers. which is more expensive.

so at the moment a two chip solution is the way to go.

Ah why not... fire it up.

The X2 does sound promissing if the drivers hold to be true.
