Is this due to dodgy diode placement on their cores?

MAN...sorry to hear it!...maybe in 6 weeks you will get a great replacement...my replacement is NOT as good as the original...i am at 200 mhz less than i was before...4200 versus 4400 mhz.

That sucks, perhaps you need a BIOS update or something as your CPU might be a binned QX9770 or QX9775. I'm hoping I don't have to wait that long.
It's really weird how a processor less than a few weeks later than the other one does not clock as well, back in the day it used to be the steppings which determined big differences. ie M0 vs D1 Northwoods or G0 vs B3 Core2Quad.
Q/C issues at Intel?
