i'm having a strange issue with my opty 170 (@2.8GHz).... the voltage in the bios is set to 1.350V + 3.3% overVID which should result in 1.394V. however, when under load CPU-Z reads 1.344V to 1.376V.

why does cpu-z read lower values, and why the voltage variations?

Those questions would require more data to even guess at an answer.
What PSU and motherboard are you running and how old are they???

As for minior fluctuations in vCore, that's typical unless you run full load 99% of the time, like SETI or F@H. I can count on my vCore dropping from idle 0.015v per loaded core. Since I run SETI 24/7 my vCore is typically 0.03v below the BIOS setting ...

as mentioned - core drop really depends on your motherboard and psu, if the psu droops you can expect some core droop, unless the board compensates.

notable boards (from the past) that didnt droop - and indeed overvolted under load were the I-Will KK266 and 266+, the original K266 howver used to suffer terrible +5v sag and the +r had a habit of lunching psu's due to the ferrocius +5 load - my own +r runs about 1.86v when loaded and set to 1.75v. and since you can set something like 2.5v in the bios...

cpu in my laptop, and old .13 clawhammer runs 2000mhz @ 1.175v needs 1.45 to get the next 200mhz to 2200 stock speed... runs .8v high also, but i have not checked the limit. maybe ill see how far i can go on 1.1v with m x2 when i get home

sorry, i thought i had the rig in my signature. anyway here it is:

    -CPU Opteron 170 @2.8GHz using C'n'Q
    -Apacer AM1 DDR400 2x1GB
    -MB MSI K8N Neo4-F PCB 1.0 BIOS 1.D
    -PSU ColorsIt Atrix 500T 600W (14+15A - 12V) 2 months old
    -EAX1950Pro crossfire edition

the vcore drop i reffered to, happens when under 100% load (orthos, prime95). however when i disable C'n'Q, and set the VID to 1.4V, the voltage rarely goes above 1.34V, when under 100% load.

If CnQ is disabled and you're running Orthos Small FFT's does the vCore vary more than ±0.01 (total range of 0.02v) ...?

for testing purposes i have set the CPU voltage to 1.4V+3.3% overvid, total of 1.446V, and raised the frequency to 2850MHz.

when C'n'Q is disabled and the CPU is idling, the voltage varies from 1.392 to 1.440V (why????), but when i load orthos small FFTs it stays in the range of 1.376-1.424V.

why so big voltage variation? i have had A64 3000+ on the same board, with older bios version and there was no such variation... could it be the bios,or perhaps a dual core CPU is too much for this board?
i have also noticed that the highest voltage value in the bios is 1.4V, whereas with the older bios version it was in the range of 1.5-ish.

    help?!?!

p.s. how far can i go with the CPU voltage?

If the voltage is jumping around that much at idle or load I'd say there's a problem somewhere. If you still have the 3000 you might try putting it back in for a test to see if the vCore is still steady with that chip. Overloading the board is a possibility if it's an older board, but I'm not very familiar with MSI.

I've run as high as 1.55 vCore with water cooling (CPU load ~42°C) but I wouldn't recommend more than 1.45 vCore for extended periods. There are some who run it 1.55v all the time and don't seem to have issues other than the extra heat ...

could it be that the voltage variation is due to a bad PSU? i would have thought so, but when the voltages are varrying when idling, i would think its mobo related?!?!

    yes

voltage variation maybe caused by weak psu, and mainly don't trust software for voltage reading

the important issue, is ur cpu stable enough for you ? if yes, then forget about anything else

is 65C acceptable temperature for oc'ed opteron 170?

coretemp says 59C is tcasemax for my cpu, so i'm wondering whether i can run it safely if it reaches 65C (cores will probably be +70C)?

well the cores are usually 5-7C hotter then the CPU casing. if i'm not mistaken tcasemax is the value for the CPU casing, so that should mean i can go to 59C absolutelly no problems (which puts the cores in the 65-67C range). i'm not stresing my cpu much, an ocasional game or dvd->divx compression, so those temps would only last for 2-3 hours a day.

are there any signs that will indicate my cpu is overheating?

    it should be ok.

signs of overheating are limited to instability and sudden power offs.
sadly, (unless you are overclocked to the chips limit at a certain voltage) a chip with a good core will tend towards overheating and suffering damage (first shown by a reduced max oc) prior to becomming unstable - but we are talking about temps well into the 80's or 90's for extended periods

i discoloured the ihs on my X2 (discovered when lapping it in an effort to drop temps) and the cpu is fine.

great! i'm gonna try to reach 3GHz, and see whether it's capable of such frequencies, and see how the temps are going to be.

i'm gonna post back with the results...

2.75@1.375v, tryed the 3.0Ghz, but it seems that will require 1.5+v i think i will keep it at 2.85Ghz 1:1 with ram

I noticed one thing, the PSU can't handle the CPU@3.0 need a new one probably a odin =D

hey folks, just informing you that i've got this chip now (opty 185 lcb9e 0742cpmw). there's one other person who's got the same chip, according to google search.

For me, it's a normal 3ghz chip at 1.44v or something. This is on air, TTBT. The other guy is only able to reach a mere 2850-something, he's using an TR XP120 which isn't a great cooler in comparison. His chip is easily hitting 50+ °C, hence his bad overclock. My TTBT is better so it doesn't hit high temps that early. But apparantly still too early: 3ghz 1.44v gives me 55°C core 45°C cpu temp. More voltage doesn't help, because it gets too hot and max overclock would rather decrease than increase.

The chip is a hotty, and obviously its heat needs to be tamed more thoroughly than can be done with my aircooling, if any (room temp) aircooling setup, in order to unlock its overclock potential. CoreTemp is reporting a Tmaxcase value of 59°C, which is LOW. For me, this is an obvious clue that the chip just doesn't like high temperatures.

I think that compared to other chips, this cpu needs a bit more voltage to perform in the overclocking department. So.. when I can make some time, phase change it is

Is It Cool To post a 1212 in here?

I've super extremely happy with my AM2 Opteron 1212. I'm a newbie here and I already posted these pics in my introductory thread. But that will get buried soon. This thread will live on for some time still it seems...

My setup (I'm currently working on my own FPS game called MTheory ~ Real Magic - This the dual LCDs come in very handy). I've never been one to spend crazy money on a case, with that said, I cannot stress how pleased I've been with that Kandalf case. It's built to last forever and the water cooling is purdy darn good with that huge 3x120MM fan rad up front. That was a nice surprise. The specs are in my sig.

Can you say 300x10, 3GHZ HTT and DDR1200? OCZ's Flex memory has been amazing. I'm currently working on tightening up the timings on this stuff. I almost have 4 4 4 12 stable at 1.2GHZ!!

A 32MB SPI and simultaneous Orthos run... just to show how tough this CPU is. Temps are pretty good too, especially with the memory at that speed... Needless to say, me very happy with this little 1212!

Not much more planned for this system. Watercooling the 8800 is in the future. I may go SLI but only if I can run SLI across two monitors.... is that possible??

    Thanks for reading.

    Hey Biohead,

Any chance of you posting your BIOS settings? I've got the same board as you and although I've been doing some tinkering, I'm still a little overwhelmed by all of the settings!

ha it isn't that bad. All I did was go through these guides:

My previous board was the Asus RD580 so I was already familiar with most of it, but I hope this helps. Any questions, feel free to PM me.

okay it's a little chilly in my room right now, 3040mhz. primed for a bit and played some UT3 to make sure this chip is capable of nice things. but with lower temps, obviously.

    10372 3DMarks with 3870 850/1200, got 11k with 180 @ 3.5ghz and 2900XT 850/1070.

i wonder what this chip is gonna be up to at -40°C, whether it's even gonna put up with it.

That chip ain't good, most 185's are MUCH better. What stepping btw? Maybe you have one that doesn't coldbug too badly, even if I think -40c is a little too much coldness anyway.
