more people would buy dual socket boards if they would make them with more oc'ing options ...

i guess as long as we can use ddr2 then we could use software to oc , but where we going to get more volts from ?

makes ~1000$ for a 8 core beast with 4 GB ram... not that expensive
Where can you find a dual lga 771 board for $200-$300?! The cheapest I've seen is around $450.

There are cheaper 5000x mobos from Tyan, but I don't think 5000x support Harpertown...

    Cheapest 5400 is $409.99

Yeah that's the one. And the 5000x doesn't support Harpertowns.

Socket placement is better on SkullTrail, so that alone warrants the purchase (so does overclocking, SLI, CrossFire, and all the useless crap gone)

Yup, which is why I'm onboard! I'm not sure if I'll be able to buy it in time though. It's obviously going to get out of stock within a few minutes after it goes on sale!

I mean the useless crap on server boards, like PCI-X slots (I haven't ever seen anything useful utilizing those ) Also the boot up diagnostic thing that server boards have that slow down boot up a little.

I would like some SAS ports on SkullTrail though

I am pretty sure that meant it makes overclocking and such better, and all the other stuff, less.

I am DEFINTLEY purchasing a Skulltrail!

Harpers on 5000x should work fine as long as you use 1333fsb cpu's and probably disable the snoop filter as well...

It would make sense that Harpertowns work on the 5000x chipset (at least the 1333 mhz Xeons should be supported) since it's still an LGA771 CPU but I read a post somewhere that stated you couldn't.

Do you have a link on that? I'd love if the 5000x series was supported because they're 1/2 the price of the 5400 series motherboards (and like 1/4 the price of the Skulltrail system ).

That system is my new system as soon as it comes out...I just hope it arrives soon.

And cost is totally irrelevant for something that powerful...

I'm sending Intel an e-mail with this link. I've also bugged my brother-in-law, who works for Intel.

They've got to understand that the market for Skull Trail is bigger than they think... but their strategy may be to create artificial short supply conditions to hype up the product.

I feel upset that the Skull Trail mobo will not be widely available to the mass market before it gets to oems like Voodoo and Falcon NW.

if you look at the supermicro boards they claim compatibility with the complete 45nm 1333 fsb line up.
tyan on the opposite claims their 5000 chipset based boards are only compatible to the only 1066 dual core 45nm xeon, but not the 1333 fsb dual / quad ones.

so its basically a case by case thing, on some boards they will work, on some they wont.

There are 2 rumors, 1 is a limited editon board, the other is that it will not be limited but full production but limited access as it will be available from intel only ( and select oems ).

I just hope they will be making enough that I can get one for about $5-600 usd, it works and oc's in bios reasonably easily with regular harper towns ( 5430, 5440 ) and they add some more options ( sas card optons? ) both for the work station crowd, the mega ocers, people who just have cash to burn etc.

Oh yes it does. My SM X7DAE and SM X7DAL-E both support Harpertown with the latest 2.0a bios..
They just don't support 1600FSB..Boards bluescreen at 394.
I know, I've tested them with DDR2-800FBDimms and they will not do 400..

Already discussed..CPU-z is wrong..The chips in that board are socket 771's and thats all it supports..server cpu's with SMP not the desktop socket 775's.
