I know, I've tested them with DDR2-800FBDimms and they will not do 400..
Thanks for that. I'm glad to see that someone actually tested it rather than trusting wikipedia (again).

    I think I just saved about $400...

I didn't test the chips...No Harpertowns here, BUT SM told me plain that they had Harpers working in a X7DAE MB..
Send me a couple Harpers and I will be glad to test them for you..

Look over on the left down a few inches under "cpu"
    and it shows harpertowns supported.
BUT if your building from scratch and can't get a SkullTrail this is the one you want:

Well I was originally planning on getting the TYAN S5392 (another Seaburg based system like the Supermicro X7DWA), then considered the Skulltrail because of OC'ing options, but now I'm considering one of the old 5000x motherboards that are in the $200~ range.

Let me ask: What Harpertowns are you planning on buying?
My question is because if one is spending say $2000.00 on chips why chinse on the board?
The 5400 seaburg is THE way to go if your building from scratch.
Yup, $500.00, but even a X7DAL-E open box is $300.00 at the egg and almost $400.00 new..
Buy the 5400 even if it's a stretch..I guarantee you you'll be happy you did in 3 months especially if you get 1600FSB cpu's..

You say you've never seen anything useful using PCI-X and then in almost the same breath say you want SAS?

My friend, you're not looking hard enough.

Not to mention all the other RAID, storage, and ethernet cards that use the standard.

I don't want it because of the additional cost; however, people purchasing workstations usually have cost as a 2nd thought.

    1. I plan on buying the $250~ E5405s = $500~ total.
    2. I won't get 1600 Mhz FSB until Nehalem simply because I won't be upgrading this lineup. Nehalem will be my next upgrade and it has a different socket anyway. The difference between 1600 Mhz and 1333 Mhz is very insignificant in my work.

    There's also SAS cards for PCI-e x16 and x8

If I do get a dual socket board, it will probably be SkullTrail because, as I said earlier, socket placement is a lot better and allows for easier mounting of coolers

Movieman - what Socket 771 boards are good in terms of overclocking?

I've got a Dell server with a pair of G0 E5310s that I feel are being wasted and I'm pondering yanking the board out in favor of something that will OC.

He's squeezed a bit more mhz out of his SuperMicro. I've heard Tyans can be quite good...

I need model numbers and approximate FSB levels that can be hit w/ FB-DIMMs.

It just makes me cry that I can't get these lovely chips over 2GHz in this farking Dell POS (and that is with a 1066-1333 Pad Mod).

In some instances, possibly, but most games only scale up to 4 cores at the most now (I mean newly released games, 1 and a half to 2 year old games usually only utilize 2 cores), so short answer, no.

If the primary purpose of your system is gaming, then save yourself some money and just get that quad. But if you do CPU intensive applications like intense video and photo editing, and all the like, a dual quad might be worth it.

Or you could be nice and set one of the CPUs to do WCG work while the other games

if not, there are still the 3 ghz 45nm xeons and 5400 boards to go with..... (prolly cheaper than skulltrail anyway).

*slaps self and goes back to waiting for q9450 and 9800 GTS(or whatever the hell nvidia will call it)*....

I thought 13500 was good on my Q6600@3.8, but this, this is completely uncalled for.

X7DWA-N I believe is the model you'll want... its the only 5400 board i've seen overclocked yet anyways.

If SkullTrail has been made available to boutique builders, then there surely has to be quite a bit of them available
