Wouldn't it be a better deal to buy the 3850 and overclock the crap out of it?

actually you can get 2 of the Sapphires from Newegg for only $450 which
includes shipping. And why would they be worthless next year? They won't
be the current State of the Art, but certainly not worthless, no moreso than
an 8800GT will be worthless when the G92-based 8800GTX comes out.

Certainly that would be a great bang for the buck.

But I have an inkling those of us who picked up 3870's
might just be OCing those as well

imo, the smart thing would be to either get a single hd3850, or a single 8800gt cause they're both good in their respective price range. if u need more performance, rather than crossfire or sli, i'd actually suggest waiting for the geforce 9 series.

-2, 3870 will cost you roughly $68 less shipped.
-Rumor has it that the dual GPU solution may come as early as this year
-8800GT is still no where to be found.
-Even if the 8800GT was available, it is in limited supply and cost higher then MSRP...
-Most people who invested in crossfire MBs can take advantage of it. It would be a waste not to use CF with video cards this cheap!
-Cat 7.11 should be released in a few days

    This is all IMO

early results are not showing these cards to be huge overclockers.

i heard that story too, but u have to keep in mind that the guy in that story was insane. so i still consider sapphire one of the best for amd graphics cards.

I bet that Nvidia really wishes they had given SLI to Intel now

So many people everywhere are scooping up 3800's because:

    a) They can CrossFire them
    b) CrossFireX will support multiple monitors
    c) Finally, cards that are priced together that make sense!

I'm amazed how many are going CF w/ the 3800's but its about time

I got my order in within minutes of becoming available on Newegg and went OOS by the time I finished the transaction.

Funny thing is Newegg has been going in stock, out of stock all day and at a great price. They must be constantly getting shipments or have a messed up inventory system. As of 7pm PST, you can still get them from newegg.

$500.00 for two with a copy Crysis = a good weekend of gaming.

Unlikely but you can apparently CF it with a 3850 if you wanted to

And expect clocks up to 860 core / 1250 memory (2500 effective) or thereabouts, thats what most reviews have shown

These cards might need an aftermarket cooling + vmod though and they might be able to hit 900+!

I have a sinking feeling these 3870's won't be $220 after today, more like $250-$260.

Remember the early $230 8800GT deals... before the retailers knew what their real market supply/demand would be?

It really highlights how chronic the high-mainstream vacuum has been.

Hmm, funny in europe HD 3870 and 8800GT costs about same and in US it's a ~$50 difference. For me HD3870 should be ~50 EUR cheaper in order to maybe concider getting one over a 8800GT.

    http://geizhals.at/eu/?fs=hd+3870&x=0&y=0&in= HD3870

    http://geizhals.at/eu/?fs=8800+gt&x=0&y=0&in= 8800GT

You're getting price gauged a bit on 8800GT still, at least on newegg. In europe prices never rised from launch, have only slowly but surely lowered. Should be 229~$249 to reflect current EU pricing on 8800GT.
