1) They contain Mercury which is a hazardous metal and if the bulb is broken you risk Mercury absorption in your body which never leaves and builds up to toxic levels. To have the area professionally cleaned up can run from $2,000-$3,000 dollars. Also if you don't turn them into a hazardous waste recycle location they end up in landfills where they pollute the earth and can get into the drinking water supply and cause bad health issues.

2) They are only made in China and China is bringing on average one coal fired power plant per week and since China has NO air quality standards or expensive scrubbers on the power plants you are actually aiding in the destruction of the planet to save yourself a couple of bucks. <gets off soap box>
