Well it has been rumoured that the 1 GB 8800GT will come out in Dec. Then the GT will have no weakness (even tho benchs at insane res shows that it still beats the GTS and not that far from GTX...

I think Nvidia next high end will simply be a G92 (prob 2). BUT with a much better heat sink (dual slot) and a full 128(or more) shaders. The shader clock will prob be 2ghz, the ram 1.4 GDD4 and the clock say 800 with a good cooling design. Also the bus will be either 384 or 512. With the rumours and nvidia claiming that there is a lot of head room with the g92 it makes the most sense. For me tho for the price and performance nothing touches the 8800GT. I mean overclocked it is on par with an ultra and my native res doesn't really need more that 512mb. Even so, i can alway SLi these suckers for less than ONE GTX. Amazing. Haven't seen performance for the price like this since GF 4 ti. Now just to wait till the madness of initial release dies down, but the sparkle stock is selling for $319 AUD and the EVA KO for $360 hhm so tempting. I can't believe that a month ago i was going to spend $350 on a 320mb GTS.

I agree. I can confirm that this is indeed a G80-A2. On the other hand that Crysis score is not completely indicative of its performance. Something you should all be aware of is that this card does not perform very well with shipped drivers AT ALL. IMO, it is a MUST to upgrade the drivers ASAP after installing the 8800GTS 112SP card.

I will be doing this review a bit differently than the 8800GT review. Since this card is geared towards people who play games at higher resolutions than 1280X1024 with AA and AF jacked up all the way, I will bench with more bangs and whistles turned on.

    Rewarmed G80? No thanks.
Instead nVIDIA should've pulled forward the 1GB version of G92 with atleast 128 SPs and 20 ROPs. Qimonda has had the needed chips for a 1GB capacity with 8 chips (256bit) in mass production for a quarter alread.
You were not supposed to see this.

Probably trying to get some extra milelage out their old line. What does is mean "superclocked 8800GT"? I'm assuming it was overclocked. What were the settings?

That is the EVGA Superclocked version of the 8800GT. 650/1900.

Well to me it's pretty dissapointing result in the review... I wanted to step up from EVGA 640 to the newer but it's hardly worth it better sell it for a decent price and get an 8800GT, also wonders me as Nvidia leaked the newer GTS will be availble beginnign of december... is that another type ?
Question : Why do some overclockers switch into d*ckmode when money is involved

Remark : They call me Pro Asus Saaya yupp, I agree

Personally, I think this card has a very particular place in the market and it is MOST DEFINATELY not around for people to upgrade their 8800GTS 640MB to.

Here is the target market for this card IMO:

Say you bought a 7600GT or 7900GT back in the day when 1280x1024 gaming was the norm. You now want to upgrade your monitor to a 22" widescreen (which seems to be the new target size for people looking to "go wide") and keep playing the latest games at this higher resolution. You know there is no way your 256MB card will handle it but at the same time the 512MB on the 8800GT is barely enough for AA and AF at that resolutionin some games.

So, for about $75 more than the completely-sold-out 8800GT you pick up a 8800GTS with 112SPs and 640MB of ram. You then sit pretty knowing that you can play at higher resolutions with more IQ settings than you would have if you had bought the GT. You also know that the 512MB of memory on the GT seems to seriously handicap it when playing DX10 games.

Yeah I can understand that but my step up program finishes in 45 days (for my 640), I had hoped the extra Sp's would bring more performance then your good review has shown me... too bad they didn't put the shaders and ram in higher gear

There is only so much they can do before they begin outperforming their 8800GTX with their cheaper GTS. They can't do this as long as there are GTX and Ultra cards in the retail channel.

On the other hand you will notice that there are VERY few GTX / Ultra cards at retailers these days so I am thinking that they are gradually rolling back production.

SKYMTL I wish you would have included the regular 640MB card in the benchmarks. Do you have any idea how it stands up to the new 640MB at higher resolutions? Obviously better, but how much better?

For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.

The Nvidia partners is making this really confusing. What I think is, they should wait for the 8800GTS G92 core and announce 112 shaders available and not unlock 112 shaders within the existing cards. This will make early 8800GTS buyers very picky.

I would have if I had one. I am gradually building up a war chest of cards (you may notice the addition of a stock 8800GT and GTX in this review over the 8800GT SC review) and the 640MB 96SP version of the 8800GTS hasn't made its way to my hands yet.

Meh... if it was an A3, i would consider. Otherwise, im happy with my A3 gts 320... It's more than enough for 1280x1024....

lol, someone hasnt played crysis. but in that case, no other card on the market right now would fare much better anyway.

I don't really get this product, it's a new 640MB SKU but the stock shader clock is way to low. Maybe if it was set to 1500MHz it would be competitive with the 8800GT. Right now it's beating the 8800GT at very high settings...problem is stock 96SP 640MB beats the 8800GT at said settings anyway, so it's not saying much about this product.

If you look at the specs, not comparing the memory difference, this card isn't even as fast as the 320mb 8800GTS Fatal1ty (which also happens to be slower than the stock 8800GT...). It's definitely not what you want to introduce as your "mid-high" product.

The point is that the regular 8800GTS 640MB is now EOL. So, they had to replace it with something else and we ge the 8800GTS with 112SPs. IMO, it is a brilliant move because the 8800GT does not cater to consumers who play at high resolutions or with high IQ settings enabled.

It should also be said that there ARE NO 8800GT cards at retail right now and there won't be for at least a few more weeks. The backorder lists are so long retailers have had to delist their cards. So, this 640MB card provides a great alternative considering it is priced about $50-$75 higher than many 8800GT cards.

Woah. I`m confused. Is the G92 GTS still going to release? I have bought an 8800 GTS KO (same as ssc but has a core speed of 540 instead of 575) by mistake (thought it was G92 for some reason) so hopefully the G92 GTS will release in 90 days if at all.

Edit: NVM question answered in different thread. So hopefully it will get its butt out by early Jan.
