    Crysis Demo Performance Analysis

    Final Thoughts

It’s clear that NVIDIA’s top dogs come out ahead of the AMD offerings, and with the giant NVIDIA logo at the start of Crysis it comes as no real surprise.

There is no doubt that Crysis is going to be at the top of the priority list for both NVIDIA and AMD as we see more drivers between now and the end of the year. It will be interesting to see how much more performance AMD can squeeze out of the HD 2900 XT, though it really doesn’t look all that good for them since the 8800GT has rocked up on the market.

The Crysis settings system works by only offering you resolutions that the computer can handle. What’s frustrating is that none of the cards here today gave us the ability to run at our native 2560 x 1600 resolution with any detail settings. With that said though, given the Ultra was only cracking 50FPS at 1920 x 1200 we wouldn’t be expecting big numbers at 2560 x 1600.

Also, if their system was flawless it wouldn’t let you choose past 800 x 600 for the 8600GTS and HD 2600 XT. While I don’t doubt that there are people out there with an 8600GTS saying “Nah this game runs great at 1280 x 1024 and high settings”, it’s clear that these people have no idea what smooth performance looks like.

You would think that after looking at this Crysis would be a bit of a video card seller, but clearly there is nothing in this generation that is really going to offer the ultimate Crysis experience; we’ll have to wait till later in the year.

Just quickly before I finally load up the demo for myself, we thought we should just make a quick mention of SLI and Crossfire performance. With the article coming up at the very last minute we tested what we had on hand and tried to offer as broad a range as possible in the extremely limited time.

    That sums it up nicely.
I run it at 25fps on 1280x1024 high settings, stock C2D 6400, 2GB RAM 800, P35 mobo, 8800 GTS 640 also stock and on vista 32 bit using 163.69 WHQL driver.

I see the new 8800GT pulls good framerates on a widescreen resolution 1680, while the GTS 320 really takes a hit when both compared to regular 1280 aspect ratios.

    DX10?
When you bring up the console, during gameplay, it sais DX10 something, if I remember correctly - So is the demo DX10 or have they botched it up?

i "tried" to play the sp demo: on medium settings it runs like crap (with high settings it doesn't run worse than with medium O_o) and on low it runs "ok", but looks totally (on low it looks like bf2 on low settings, but with the difference that bf2 runs good even on high settings and crysis doesn't) - so i stopped playing it.
imo, crysis is a game that pretty much lives from its visuals. and with the settings on low i had no fun playing it. ;/

A lot of the hardware can barely run it but I also need to echo that the developers are really shooting themselves in the foot when typical PC gamers can't afford to play it

Not to mention that I found its gameplay to be pretty lacking in fun compared to other games, and unoptimized at that

Go back three years, I see something similar... What was it called? Wasn't it?
Oh yeah, I remember now, Far Cry...
Same thing back then, people complaining left and right that they couldn't play it on their 9800XT's and 5950U's.... Then along comes the GF6 and X800, and whoppedido, everybody's happy again...

Anybody calling this game badly programmed, need to look at the game, and actually get realistic about what their computers are capable of...
Show me ONE SINGLE game which has better, more intense graphics, and then show me how that runs on your system...
For somebody's sake, this game looks like it came out of a goddamn 3dMark... What were you expecting, Quake3-like frames per second?
I might sound like a fan-boy right here, but I have only two more words to say to the people complaining: Get... Real...

For the first time in a while, I am actually glad I have SLI. Until this hit, it had been a waste the last 6 months from a true seat of the pants point of view.

I was thinking of getting a single ultra and moving to a X38 board...but it ain't gonna happen now. The latest round of games has me appreciating SLI.

It ran buttery smooth on @ 1680 x 1050 with AA 4 and AF 16, high settings on the rig spec'd below.

BTW, the demo was indeed bad ass.

Well so far it seems to run okay on even old lethargic systems (albeit at crapola settings) & okay on a reasonably high end system (minus the BSOD's when I try to use SLI.

Not that impressed so far but i'll buy the game if just to play some half decent Mods & online.

Man I'm jealous I had 8800GTS SLI for ~4 months then sold it when all the demos of "next gen" games came out and they ran great single card. I even moved up to a 1920*1200 display because my single GTS had no issues running it... till crysis. Time to pick up a second card... again.

Very very true. Just because the game has next-gen graphics, it doesn't make it a bad game?! Also, some people are too obsessed with insanely high resolutions. Drop that down to 1280x800 widescreen or 1280x1024 4:3 and even DX10 Very High settings run 'OK', and that's before final game optimisations and better drivers.

High settings run fine on my single GTX, which figures, seeing as SLI is broke in the demo at the moment anyway...

So your extra cash hasn't been justified just yet. I can see A LOT of people forking out for a second GTX or Ultra if it does make Very High settings playable at high resolutions though.

There is really no way to run this game at high (say, over 1280x1024) resolutions with high settings other than SLI. First game I can think of that's actually true

what driver r u using?? i thought SLI isnt enabled yet ....

i have 1 GTS RMAed, should be back next week, with a single GTS its fine high @ 1440x900 no aa 16af, i get ~35fps when moving around, 40+fps standing still

when fps drops below 30 it start to lag

also many of the very high only feature in this game can be had in DX9, by tweaking cfg ... such as sunshafts .. i dont think parallax mapping can be done in DX9 tho, but most features can, 3d water, higher draw distance ... etc

afaik nv's SLI performance under vista is pretty bad ...

start the game, look at the graphics, thinking "thats nice"

    playing the game.
    go to objective a,
    go to objective b,
go to objective c or you can visit objective b/c instead.
    turned the game off, uninstalled.

Yes this game looks nice, but its gameplay is from stone age.

he's trying to say the game is ahead of it's time and we'll all stop complaining when 3800s and 9800s (or whatever next gen will be called) come out and run the game on very high and it looks stunning.

Sorry but I have SLI running just fine. Of course this is with DX9 as I removed that POS vista months ago. Running the 169.01 beta and DX9 the game runs great in SLI. I'm sure I'm missing something not running DX10 (besides the headaches of vista), but the game still looks great.

Vista sucks and will never be on any of my rigs until it works like it's supposed to.
