Personally, the bloat doesn't bother bother me, but I know it does others, I just disable some of the process reliant services like readyboost, firewall, windows defender, defrag, bitlocker, and a few others, the backup file I just set to OS files only so keeps it to a minimum.

If Vista will operate effectively with 2 gig and not suck all the resources I will try it..When I first read that you needed 2 gig to run it that turned me off.
I have 2 gig in that system BUT 500MB is needed constantly for the WU's.

Vista uses all ram available in a caching system, often my 4GB is 90% used, but it is all cached, the minute something requests ram, the cache is dumped allowing the ram to be available to whatever task is asking for it

I just went through this link here http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm (found it in 1 of njkids posts as indicated by linflas) and trimmed down the services running and turned off superfetch. After a restart Task Manager now reads (with 8 WUs crunching)

Those look to be communication errors, not computational... but he did say it rebooted so not stable, yet, but looks like theres room for more volts.
