I've been following Intel Core 2 duo/Quad prices and the prices are dropping off. That signals a new (faster) CPU is going to be released, as I don't understand why Intel would cut prices otherwise.
Hmm, I wonder if they have a 1600 FSB in the works![]()

Well well well... looks like I made a good decision on not upgrading till Q1 2008.

I'm still not convinced that quad core will be best for the whole of 2008 and so I fall into the E8400 as the best choice from those options. Cheap cost and 9 multi. I really like the 9 multi for general 24/7 stuff as it matches well with CL4 6400 DDR2 chips which are not very expensive. 9x400=3.6Ghz which all E8400's should do with ease. All the money saved on the chip and memory and motherboard can then be pumped into the larger monitor and fast graphics card.
A nice bang for the buck system would be
E8400 running at 9x400
4GB 6400CL4 DDR2
Cheap P35 or similar motherboard
24inch LCD
Perhaps the new 2900Pro ( if you can get your hands on one).
Interesting to note the equivalent of my $999 Conroe X6800 is soon to be $183 and is improved with more cache with the E8400 .. such is progress
Regards
Andy
E8400 preferred here too. Hoping the x9 multi is stable both summer/winter temps and error free while at 24/7 3.6GHz-4GHz. Or it'd be a waste to upgrade from a C2D.
Prices should be retailed higher than that, I would think about 100 more actually, especially within first 3-4 weeks of demand. Depends when they get them out.
those look like really nice prises.. wow i can actually afford to buy few of em with out having to resort selling my organs![]()

Q9450 for 316$ *starts looking for the queue to order*
definitly a winner in case those prices arent too far off....
whoa, better pricing than I had imagined.
Definitely will be picking one of these up![]()
i would say the q9450 is the sweet spot, just a few more bucks, and we all know some retailers will have them for 280, and the 6m cache quad for prolly 240, after the first month.
i see alot of 4ghz standard rigs before xmas.
my q6600 will be my main proc till late 2009 though, i swore it on myself! not to spend more on my gaming machine
although one of these dual core penryns will be going in my ageing K8 htpc for sure

While I don't have any probs with that the best steppings of Q9450 perhaps might be able to handle 4GHz even on highend air or wc, I think mobos will have a harder time being stable at speeds like 8x500 for example, I have a hard time believing that will be a common stable quad core FSB. So yea I see the reason why the 8.5x & 9x quad is so much expensier. For dual core 8x is just about enough or for "surfing on the wave of your mobo fsb limit" for most ppl with a P35 board for example but with quad a 8.5x/9x multi would be nice for a quad core with good overclockability if you're that person that wants to overclock to the max and wanna take the advantage of the overclocking benefit of the new CPU series lineup. Isn't like 465~480 where Kentsfield usually tops out on P35 mobos with non extreme cooling setups? I pray for that Penryn somehow would allow easier overclocking of quads or put less stress on the mobo so that the the typical FSB wall of quads would rise from let's say 470~480 to sth more like 500~510. That would be nice but I doubt it but I'm always allowed to dream.

I'm thinking about purchasing a cheap ASUS P5B-E or P5B plus to install Q9450 later on it. Sorta proceeding upgrade from E6400 to Yorkfield.
