plenty to read in thread but here's the pics
heres the temps i am getting with just 4x 12cm fans
i didnt lap the cpu as brilliantly as this guy's finish as i was a bit nervous to go to far. have lapped several heatsinks in the past but that was my first attempt at lapping a cpu. i didnt know how far to go and because my machine was in bits it wasnt like i could go online and check.
i may lap it yet but been contemplating which lapping method is best: circular, straight or figure of 8 - i see pro's for them all. can anyone say if they found one is better from experience?

Guys one think I missed somehow here is - Should we apply thermalpaste after lapping or not ?
If both the heatsink and CPU is lapped to mirror finish ,do you still need thermal paste ?
Did anyone try without thermalpaste after lapping?
Last edited by nfsnfs; 09-07-2007 at 06:13 AM.
Are you serious ? ofcourse you should apply thermalpaste, do you really think you can get it 100% flat, no way mate, there will still be small microgaps, that's where the thermalpaste jumps in...
I read that Ceramique grease works better than AS5 with lapped surfaces...
And Pee for your temps, just add 10-15°c you got one of those borked sensors like I had with my 644 and 744G ones... your temps only could be right if you were in a room where the ambient is 10°C or so...
Question : Why do some overclockers switch into d*ckmode when money is involved
Remark : They call me Pro AsusSaaya yupp, I agree
Pee those are damn good temperatures man, specially with the air. I am stunned.

Well these temperature readings are from INTEL TAT, which gives correct temp reading. But temp looks fishy to me too, but then how ?

I just don't have my two G CPU's anymore but they read out wrong in TAT too (all were below ambient temperatures at idle), just a borked read out, airconditioned room to unhuman low temps ?, open window while cold wind blows in ?
Also look at the lapped CPU and look at yours, mine looks like copper that one looks like a polished IHS...
He ain't faking it , his CPU is just read out wrong...

my temps are 19-24 depending whether read in bios (1216), speedfan, asus probe or tat. the heatsink is cool to touch and gets warm when under load. i have a 12cm fan directly on the heatsink and a faster fan on the rear than the intake so air doesnt have a chance to stagnate & get warm. its a good setup.
if you want i can film tat, bios and speedfan for a few minutes and you can see it fluctuate just a few degrees.
i'll remind you that the chip is not overclocked, doesnt seem to like it. check google and you'll find a few people getting same or better temps than me. also there are people here with much higher speeds than me and temps are only 10 degrees above. if i was to get a decent overclock i can see temps going up by that. my chip is sitting at 2.4ghz or less versus some of your guys 3.2ghz or faster with higher voltages.
anyway why would i lie? if i was here to lie my pc spec would be amazing & claim to get awesome overclocking results. truth is my processor isnt overclocking at all, i am hoping i am doing something wrong - havent overclocked for years and am way out of touch. anyone happy to guide me?
also note i lapped that with just 2400 paper - i didnt do more course stuff as its just eroding layers of material then you decide to move to the fine stuff. and people here are concerned about enough pressure on the cpu, adding washers etc. yet are eroding several layers of metal!! if you do body filler on a car you only use the course stuff to quickly remove bulk, then use the finer stuff to flatten / smooth the surface for a fine paint finish
also i found that with a lapped heatsink / cpu you need less paste because the pits and valleys arent as bad so you need less to fill those tiny gaps. btw this is the first cpu i lapped and didnt do an amazing job as some of these guys, im still contemplating doing it

So take your ambient temps plz and you will see that the read out is borked, I had exact the same thing with both my G cpu's which overclocked first like crap, so I kept them at stock ( at my folks, they don't need it anyway) they idled at lower temps than ambient... all CPU's idle above room temp with air cooling, pretty logic not ?
That's why I stressed you are not faking them screenshots you just got a dud in readout

Well I'm dissapointed.. Lapped my E6600 and temps increased about 6c. So now it's up to 63/62 load with TR Ultra120/Noctua 1200rpm fan. It seemed pretty flat when I checked it with a razor afterwards, but I guess not. Maybe I need to lap the heatsink aswell?
Although this time I applied the thermal grease a little different than before. Before I just put a little in the middle and kinda spread it out with the heatsink, this time I used the creditcard method and spread everything out before I put the heatsink on.
EDIT: I had accidently turned the fan :x Instead of blowing air through the heatsink it was sucking air out of it. Now it's at about 55/54C load. Not a major drop but I hope it will drop a few degrees more after the thermal grease has set.

if the temps are "borked" then it has happened since lapping because before they were reading mid 30's on idle

I removed mine and gave it another go with a 'premium' lapping kit and got a much better finish than before.....flat as I could get it doing the razor blade testDid mine the other day due to bad temps and uneven temps across the cores (7c difference between core 0 and core 2!)I have it at a small 25% clock @ stock voltages and am pretty pleased with temps.....although I have always had the same 6 degree difference between core 0 and core 2....even before I lapped (add 8 to each figure before lapping)

So your ambient temp is like ? plz don't tell me you got below ambient temps on air due to a good lapping... plus you took of 12-15°C on idle ? amasing man, I'll send you each of my CPU if you can do such a lapping and I won't be shocked each extreme member will send you theirs, you got some busy lapping jobs to do soon ...

i got no reason to lie, if i was here for that my pc would be far higher specced. i lapped with just 2400 silicon carbide and thats my results, i was happy but had seen better online. someone else should lap the way i did with a chip that they know reads right for comparison. maybe mine is buggered? i dont see the point using course stuff as i already said your eroding layers until you then decide to swap to smoother paper and smooth the surface several layers in. you've taken away these layers and then when you install it, concerned about enough contact pressure ..... maybe there is something there? this is my first C2D so i cant compare and have no friends willing to dismantle their machines for a test.
im not going to try & convince anyone, believe what you want but the heatsink is cool to touch, co-inciding with the readings. if i could get one of those infrared thermal thingies to read out temps on the heatink i would happily do a video for you. or if i could get a spare chip i would happily try repeat my lapping method.
im considering a cpu upgrade and if i do it will be lapped and results posted. check the asus vip forums: there are some people with idle temps better than me & they live in warmer climates. it's 20 degrees inside & outside temps been 23-28 over the summer. i'm not exactly idling at the moment (have azureus and winamp running) but temps are 22-25 and 24-28 on the two cores.

Just lapped mine yesterday... It seems a few deg's cooler, but not a huge diff watercooled. Once I get the AS5 cured and set in, a few days from now I will know better.

thanks...
Coretemp reports (at 3.8ghz) idle 1-2 degrees off,
running superpi (a single threaded app that loads 1 cpu) bounces from 2-7 degrees off
running Orthos (a multithreaded app that loads both CPU's) is exactly the same temp
All circumstances reports appx 9 degrees cooler than bios and ITE smartguardian report.
