After making some additional tests yesterday, I found that the cpu was indeed throttling, which is strange given than even with stock cooling people tend to get more than 3.2 ghz. Maybe the cooler is making bad contact with ihs, i'll have to check. Or the ninja is a bad cooler for quads...

After swapping the Noctua 1200 rpm with a TT 2400 rpm, it was fully stable with Prime95 (4 threads) even with lower vcore.

    Some pics later.

I swapped the ninja for a Coolermaster GeminII,
imho it's the push-pin mounting that compromises the
    performance of the ninja...

Glad to hear your quad is running fine now!

I changed the retention to screws, so that isn't it. I'll have to check if it's making a good connection.

    Ok, here are the pics:

This is at 3200, 355x9, 1.25v bios, 1.248v load, Ninja rev B with TT smartfan at 2400 rpm. Vdroop mod already made.

    And the throttling pic:

This is at 3200, 355x9, 1.425v bios, 1.272v load, Ninja rev B with Noctua 1200 rpm (no mod yet).

How do people with intel cooler manage to get greater speeds??

Usually by having a good PSU, getting lucky with the CPU and good memory - then its down to BIOS settings and cooling -lol! What is your full PC signature and your current BIOS settings.

    Asus P5K vanilla (vdroop mod)
    Q6600 G0
    2x1GB Team Elite DDR667 (does 1000 5-5-5-15)
    LC-Power 550w GP
Ninja Rev. B + Noctua 1200 rpm (also custom WC being rebuilt)

    Bios settings are almost everything auto, except vcore@1.25v, multi@9, fsb@355, vdimm@2.1v, ram@4-4-4-12 DDR710.

Last night i tested my WC setup and at 3600, 1.4v, it seems to be stable at prime95, but throttles past a few minutes... Contact with IHS isn't optimal, there are spots where it doesn't make good contact. I need to lap the waterblock to try and get a more even contact.

PS: the board doesn't have a setting to control the throttling, so how do I know what's max temp before it throttles? Is it the cpu or the board that start lowering the multi?

I always use manaual settings whereever possible as auto defaults to lowest as a rule. I assume you have read this post on previous page http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...&postcount=361 only use the auto settings he suggests and manually apply the other settings suggested in the print. Under CPU setting set CPU ratio to manual and set multiplier. Disable all others except PECI. Check qfan disabled under Hardware monitor. Increasing PLL to 1.6-1.7 , FSB =1.4 and MCH - 1.55 can greatly help stability in a lot of cases. What are your temps on the q6600 - if its like my E6850 you add 15c to the coretemp reading as the q6600 has a tjunction of 100c but core temp only shows it at 85c. I thought throttling only kicked in when it reached tjunction and you shouldn't be anywhere near that with water cooling (unless its boiling water -lol!) . This detailed thread on the subject may provide you with some answers.http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/24...ature-readings. Whilst I was googling around I also found this quad core overclocking guide which look fairly useful http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/24...ds-duals-guide -A lot of it you may already know if you have done a lot of o/c but it has some very good detail - note the point he makes on lapping both the CPU and the IHS for the quad. This site has a good lapping guide by Freecableguy http://www.thetechrepository.com/. Also read his new article on overclocking - very interesting and extremely informative. A bit technical but worth the effort as it nice to understand what you are doing when overclocking - and freecable guy really does know his stuff!

CPU controls throttling and its the C1E halt state in the bios I believe...I think they throttle at 75c or so but not sure...

    Hi everyone,
I've fried one of my MOSFETS, can someone tell me the exact part name/number on their board because I can't find any info on the part used on my board (didn't even found the manufacturer).

The burned mosfet is pointed with red:

Let me guess... he's entering an overclocking contest hosted by a Dutch hardware-website? I was thinking of getting that combo myself to enter that same contest. Looks like there are more people who are thinking the same things...

    Good luck to him!

BTW: Just out of curiosity: What cooling is he going to use? LN2, Phase Change, Water...?

    Really Puzzled

Hey fellow P5K Deluxe owners. Got a question about my board. I got it 3 days ago. The first 2 days my system would power down completely when I shut down Windows. Now the system won't shut down completely. The fan and power light stay on all the time. Funny thing is everything else works perfectly. Does this mean my new board is defective?

The last time that happened to me on another MB it was the PSU starting to die . Have you got another one you can test with. Did you installed anything before this happened - if so uninstall and see what happens. If you are running winxp this may help http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.php.

Learn was so gentle to help me via PM, though somehow my pictures didn't seem to be very clear, I'll upload another picture here if that's not a problem.

EDIT: thx to Learn, seems like the component on his board is made by NIKO-SEM semiconductor, that's no where near the text that is printed on my board. Here is the datasheet if any cared
    http://www.cheertech.com.tw/Niko-sem...5CPA102FDG.pdf

Beardyman, if you read this, I e-mailed my local dealer, he'll wheck component availability monday I guess.

i have the p5k vanilla, and a quick question, if setting the bios to 1.45v on cpu, i get 1.31v in idle, and under load with my q6600 and prime95 i drop to 1.22

i am wondering, i have 6 noctua 120mm fans all plugged directly into the motherboard, is this a drain on the mobos voltages? should i just get a molex to 3-pin adapter (as well as 3 3-pin splitters to run them all off one molex) and have them running directly off the power supply (corsair hx620)?
i just wonder at what point does one want to stop using the motherboards 3-pins and just power fans right off the powersupply with an adapter?

thanks so much as ive RMA'ed one board already and find the p5k vanilla a finicky board, especially with trying to run 4x1gb ballistix 8500 sticks....

hey dinos, can you help me? my q600 L727A673(same batch as yours) is running at 3.4Ghz with temps of 38-67C and is aircooled by a tuniq120. i'm using crucials 8500 for my rams. prime95 stable for 8 hours.

    these are my settings...

    Ratio CMOS Setting 9
FSB Strap To North Bridge(Mhz) 333
    FSB Frequency 380
    PCIE Frequency 100
    DRAM Frequency AUTO ***

    Write Recovery time AUTO
    Write To Read Delay AUTO
    Read To Precharge time AUTO
    DRAM Static Control Disabled

    Transaction Booster Enabled
    Boost Level 1
    Clock Over-Charging Mode AUTO
    CPU Spread Spectrum Disabled
    PCIE Spread Spectrum Disabled

CPU Voltage 1.375 : pencil mod -1.376 CPUZ

    FSB Termination Voltage 1.4***

I've marked the settings that confuse me, as i don't exactly know what they are for and what is optimal for my rig. please give me insight on thier purpose so i can oc better. as for the rams i intend to tighten them later.

the way i approach voltage is that i always run everything at stock unless required higher hence all these i would leave at lowest values and if some instability resulted from that i would start increasing these

DRAM frequency is ratio selection basically and you should not leave it at auto as you have no control over what speed your RAM will run at

for the record i don't know what the heck Voltage reference refers too either hehehe but it didn't seem to do anything for me

i would reduce PLL to lowest value as it may hurt the CPU if it overvolts past 1.9v for any reason. You will notice that benchers with ultra high FSB benchmarks jack up that voltage to 2.2 or 2.4 but there were some instances where the CPU FSB OCs reduced considerably after using past 1.95v there

BTW, thanks for taking time to reply to my query...
i increased the PLL setting from 1.4 to 1.6V my idle temps increased by 6-8C. so yes, i'm going as low as i can. but doesn't that control the fsb clockability? higher fsb requires higher PLL voltage???

How about FSB termination voltage? i'm more used to my former Gigabyte ds4 and new to asus. perhaps a different name for the same item...confusing...

    so far my OC...
