sp2 is also must. After sp2 instal latest intel inf -chipset drivers. -- Has nothing to do with SP2. Driver might be needed though regardless of SP1 or SP2

You see it correctly. Installed sp2, nothing changed. Tried 3 cables, no go. But I may have the solution. One of the pins (or what you call it) is only half the height of the others. It is pin no. 21, which is responsible for some DMA thing (and guess it is related to some Windows stuff). I guess I tried to put the ide cable the other way round and it pushed the pin back. I didn't notice this then, but clearly I have a non-working rw drive since then.
