I did some research for y'all. It's a E6420 versus my brand new E6850 on my P35-DQ6. I used a Kill-A-Watt to measure power consumption.
Summary:
1. The E6420 kicks its own butt, as it can OC to 3.2GHz at its stock voltages on this MB!
2. The E6850 kicks everything, as it can OC to 3.6GHz at stock voltages and uses less power while doing so; 20W less at 3.0GHz! 10W at idle! Thus, with this CPU, I can idle at the 3.6GHz setting, and use very little power, but it will use 80W more when fully loaded. It's the best of both worlds: low power when idle, high power when not idle. Now if only nVidia can do that...
3. I couldn't get 3.8 or 4.0GHz at "auto" voltages". Trying not spend too much time OCing this thing...
4. Using "Auto" voltages on this MB makes power consumption go through the roof.
Setup:
- P35-DQ6
- ambient temp around 76-80F
- F5g BIOS (F5L didn't work as well at 445FSB, 2.4x mem multiplier)
- 2.4x mem multiplier seemed the most stable
- dual 24" LCD monitors
- mem at 2.0V 1066MHz 5-5-5-5-9 (except at 375MHz, where it is 900MHz)
- nVidia 8800GTX BFG OC 600MHz/900MHz
- Scythe Ninja cooler with NExus 120mm fan at 12V
- Corsair 520W PS; at this power range it is around 85% efficient, so I included these numbers
- APC UPS used 30-35W at idle; the two monitors together use 86W; thus PC box is using around 120W less than shown, and PC parts are using 85% of that number
- In the lowest idle case, it's (300W - 120W = 180W) * 85% = 153W
- In the highest OC case, it's (444W - 120W = 324W) * 85% = 275W, thus the CPU and associates VRMs are consuming 122W more over minimum!!
- Temps aren't final; burn in time was around 30 seconds; TAT was used for burn in and temp reading
E6420, B2 stepping
- In Windows, idle:
- 133MHz FSB bus, all stock voltages (0.8GHz 6x) - 35C - 306W - (underclock, and memory was at 533MHz - since CPU was same temp, 35C seems to be min temp)
- 266MHz FSB bus, all stock voltages (1.6GHz 6x) - 35C - 310W
- 333MHz FSB bus, all stock voltages (2.0GHz 6x) - 35C - 310W
- 375MHz FSB bus, all stock voltages (2.25GHz 6x) - 35C - 311W (mem at 900MHz)
- 400MHz FSB bus, all stock voltages (2.4GHz 6x) - 36C - 312.5W (mem at 1000MHz)
- 445MHz FSB bus, "auto" voltages (made 1.46Vcore) (2.67GHz 6x) - 44C - 340W
- In Windows, TAT on both cores:
- 133MHz FSB bus, all stock voltages (1.066GHz 8x) - 44C - 335W - (underclock, and memory was at 533MHz)
- 266MHz FSB bus, all stock voltages (2.133GHz 8x) - 50C - 366W
- 333MHz FSB bus, all stock voltages (2.666GHz 8x) - 54C - 380W
- 375MHz FSB bus, all stock voltages (3.000GHz 8x) - 58C - 389W (mem at 900MHz)
- 400MHz FSB bus, all stock voltages (3.200GHz 8x) - 60C - 396W (mem at 1000MHz)
- 445MHz FSB bus, "auto" voltages (made 1.46Vcore, up from 1.35Vcore) (3.56GHz 8x) - 66C (30s burn in time) 444W - Got BSOD from heat? Normally single thread prime stable.
E6850, G0 stepping (memory is at 1068MHz in most cases)
- In Windows, idle:
- 333MHz FSB bus, all stock voltages (2.000GHz 6x) - 19C - 300W
- 356MHz FSB bus, all stock voltages (2.136GHz 6x) - 19C - 305W
- 400MHz FSB bus, all stock voltages (2.400GHz 6x) - 24C - 305W (mem at 1000MHz)
- 445MHz FSB bus, "auto" voltages (made 1.44Vcore, up from 1.32Vcore) (2.136GHz 6x) - 26C - 328W
- In Windows, TAT on both cores:
- 333MHz FSB bus, all stock voltages (3.0GHz 9x) - 39C - 367W
- 356MHz FSB bus, all stock voltages (3.2GHz 9x) - 42C - 376W
- 400MHz FSB bus, all stock voltages (3.6GHz 9x) - 47C - 386W (mem at 1000MHz)
- 445MHz FSB bus, "auto" voltages (made 1.44Vcore, up from 1.32Vcore) (3.560GHz 8x (not 9x)) - 54C - 416W

Why does my Gigabtye keep on restting to stock speeds after every reboot even after I set the correct voltages?

It does not like what you entered in bios.Give it what it wants and it does not happen.

I don't own a DS4 but I think so.
If you see the heatpipes of the DQ6 which is larger than a DS4, you can fit a 8800 GTX. Moreover under the first PCI-E there is no high components.
Moreover the heatpipe on you 8600 GTS as some clearance between the base of PCI-E slot and the heatpipe.
In my opinion it should fit without problem.

im still using the bios i got with the board.
cheers.
u should try posting in ga-965p thread not the p35

What BIOS gives best performance, F3 or F5G (DS4)? Has any1 compared both those yet, I've skimmed through all pages but only found comments on F3 being faster than F4 and F5 faster than F4 but how about F5 vs F3?

Intel? Core i5-4670K @ 4.3 GHz | ASRock Extreme6 Z87 | G.Skill Sniper 2x8GB @ DDR4-1866 CL9 | Gigabyte GTX 970 OC Windforce 3x | Super Flower Titanium 1000W | ViewSonic VX2268wm 120Hz LCD | Phanteks PH-TC14PE | Logitech MX-518 | Win 7 x64 Professional | Samsung 850 EVO & 840 Pro SSDs
If all people would share opinions in an objective manner, the world would be a friendlier place
I think they are the same in real app performance. From my...er...feeling, i think F3 is just a little faster but F5 gives u better clock.
Headshot ! those who can, do, those who can't, complain.
