sp2 is also must. After sp2 instal latest intel inf -chipset drivers. -- Has nothing to do with SP2. Driver might be needed though regardless of SP1 or SP2
If these doesnt help try another cd/dvd -drive to see if that works... -- It works in "BIOS" mode and during installation
Yes of course inf -driver is needed regardles of SP version.. SP2 is a must for data security. Thats why i would install it in a hurry. Cannot imagine why someone would voluntary be online wit SP1. Anyways there must be something fundamentally wrong if DVD-drive doesnt work after a clean install... just like you adviced device manager is exactly what i would also look first.

Naturally first you try to fix the software... if nogo... then you have to start looking explanation from the harware side. If there is somekind of a suttle problem wit Ide-cable, DVD-drive or even MB the XP installation could be succesfull for example in slower PIO -mode... and for some reason this wouldnt work on installed OS. Far fetched i know but propably possible... compatibility problem is also not yet ruled out.

I have the same MB ...clean installed XP SP1 about a week ago...had PATA HD as master and PATA CD-RW/DVD drive as slave. No problem there. If one has just DVD- drive on ide cable one has to set it up as a master. There cannot be slave without a master. Always setup HD as master. After this one should install inf -drivers and see if that helps.

I´ll soon install Vista from PATA DVD-drive (setup as master) to SATA HD... will see how that goes.
