It may be relevant to your trouble shooting to note that no HD can saturate a SATA 1 interface so worrying about whether your drives are running in SATA 1 or SATA II mode is irrelevant. Look at the STR reported in HDTach compared to their specs. If they are performing to spec, great... if not, then you have a problem, but it's likely not the SATA link speed since neither standard can bottleneck any HD.

Another thing to note is that certain stripe sizes will improve some benchmarks and hurt others. IIRC HD Tach uses 32KB data chunks so a stripe that splits this evenly across the number of drives in your array (i.e. 16KB for 2 drives or 8KB for 4) will make it appear to perform the best. That's not to say your real world performance will necessarily benefit. A good rule of thumb is to use a stripe size that is 64KB divided by the drives in your array (32KB for 2 drives and 16KB for 4 drives).

My experience with RAID, even with using a top quality ARECA card is that at best you can expect to turn out some flashy benchmarks, but even a 4 drive RAID 0 array on an ARECA has very little real-world benefit in most windows operations since the disk system is often not the bottleneck (which may be a surprise to many). Loading Windows for example is not just about loading data from disk into memory but actually executing the code - a faster processor and slow disk is better than a slow processor and fast disk. Same with loading a game level or transcoding a video. After having spent a rediculous amount of money on RAID, I still run it, but with little real-world benefit. I think having multiple single disks would actually be more beneficial in many cases than a RAID0 array. As usual... YMMV.

A little install question about RAID.

To get those ~400mb/s with 2 same hdds like WD 740FD (important are 2 exactly same HDDS).

1.) Using PQMAGIC to format the two hdds with 16k Stripes and 4k Cluster correct?
2.) While the Installation of Windows, using the RAID disc.
3.) After the Installation, you have RAID0 (one partition for the two HDDs)

But... How do you formating the RAID0 Parition which is the system partition? One RAID with 2 HDDs gives you one partition free, correct?

A RAID 0 array combines multiple physical disks into a single logical disk. Your OS will see a RAID 0 Array as a single volume unless you partition it into multiple partitions... which is possible just as it is with a normal HD. Your RAID 0 array works and is managed just like a normal HD from the perspective of your OS.

I didn't know there was a problem with 4x1GB of micron (perhaps I'm just not recalling but either way, a link to the original problem would be good).

Let us know what you find.

You can call me a fool My SATA II problem was connected with a jumper. On my brand new SATA II Seagate harddrives there is a jumper, which is forcing disk to be working at SATA I mode It is factory setting. I've removed the jumper and transfer is better now Unfortunately it seems that nvraid windows drivers need improvements. My Windows XP64 is performing better that Vista Ultimate 64 but still the numbers could be higher.

The problem is not with micron memory, problem is with memory that dont have micron, like my Geil ultra PC2-6400 CL4. I waitnig new DFI 680i because first one is dead, and wory because this link http://www.csd.dficlub.org/forum/showthread.php?t=3232

To setup and install a RAID array, you should do the following:

    - First ensure only the drives you want in the array are connected to the mobo... disconnect all other drives until after Windows is installed and running.
    - Boot to motherboard bios and enable RAID on the SATA ports you are using
    - Reboot and enter the RAID bios (wait for it to flash during the POST process and press the appropriate key)
    - Build your RAID array using the desired stripe size
    - Reboot into motheboard bios and set your RAID array as your first HD boot device
    - Reboot and install Windows... load RAID drivers using F6 in XP or when prompted in Vista
    - Everything should work fine.
    - Reconnect your other hard drives (if any).

ya ... might be reason to worry... i looked up your memory and a review on the website newegg caught my eye ::

These are NOT Micron D9s. Some generic noname chips. No good. I guess I got the bottom of the barrel this time... I guess my RAM upgrade will have to be postponed.
    -----

anyways, they may work who knows ... the 680i is a high-end performance board and you're basically putting low-end ram in it .... kinda defeats the purpose...

4gb is 4gb, can any one buy micron 4bg? I cant. But this mem is work good with P35, and striker . With 4 X 1GB i can do 1070 Mhz CL5 stable, and all with 3-35-3-3-8 subtiminig at P35. It is hadn pick elpida, or promos not shure. But here is no problem memory, problem is BIOS, and that must be solvd.

Well after losing two 8800GTX's in the mail courtesy of Australia Post, I picked up 2 new ones from a local store on monday

Had SLI running within minutes of plugging them in, and since this is my first foray into Nvidia GPU's I must say thus far I am impressed. A very simple process.

I am also glad I decided on the DFI 680i as the extra PCI slot will be handy. The 3rd x16 PCI-E lane is a waste, but not to worry.

My only concern is the fan on the southbridge is a little noisy at times since installing the 2 GTX's, but it comes and goes and isn't too unbearable. Lucky my MIPS blocks are arriving soon

I'm also still very seriously considering going to phase change cooling.

I am going to reinstall XP and Vista this weekend. I am coming off a RAID 0 array of 2x320Gb Seagate 7200.10's and will be replacing them with a single 150gb Raptor.

I'll perform some benchmarks etc and see how the Raptor performs under both XP and Vista. Stay tuned.

    from what i recall the 3rd lane isn't a true 16 ... i believe its physically a 4 or an 8 i forget which...

i haven't experienced any noise from the southbridge but then again my other fans would drown out any noise its making.

i too run dual 8800 GTX and my only concern is with the heat they produce. i'm running a good exhaust system with seven 120mm fans exhausting and the heat that dumps out of my rig can be unpleasant at times... especially with this california heatwave in progress... =/

Anyone having problems using eSATA? I use a Vantec Nexus3 and connect the esata cable and route it into one of the SATA ports.

BIOS had real trouble detecting the drive and both XP and Vista wont boot when its turned on, even though its not a system drive.

    USB works fine however.

Too expensive... my WD 2500 AAKS is fast enough (210mb/s @single) and 2x160 WD Raptor are more than fast enough (~400mb/s @Raid).

But the Cache of this HDD is interesting (32mb instead of 16mb (my WD)).

GNU, what software did you use to measure your 210MB/s single and 400MB/s in Raid configuration?
