I don't think is the weight or pressure so much as the twisting caused by the force on the tip of the clip, (1) causing a rotation of the thin "arms", (2).

If you tied the two clips on either end of the heatsink together with wire, (3), (be careful not to cause a short), you could probably reduce the risk of clip failure. (Of course, if there are capacitors in the way it's a non-starter).
