But someone here said it doesn't fit(the screws, too long) with the infinity. It will fit with a ninja.

BTW do you get with a Bolt Thru kit, a backplate(same as the retention bracket for s775 from thermalright?) + screws + springs?

I have the mounting hardware of a Swiftech storm block. Are those springs strong enough? And are the screws too long/too short/good?

The screws are only threaded at the bottom.

It depends on what you want to accomplish.

If you only want to attach the HSF more securely than the push-pins, (with the same pressure), I would recommend the ThermalTake RM LGA775 backplate. It has 3mm threaded bosses. You’ll need to pickup some 3mm socket head machine screws, (10-15mm long), and some washers. If you can’t find some 2.5mm spacers to put between the Infinity clips and the motherboard, you could use the white part of the push-pins to maintain the distance.

If you’re trying to increase the pressure on the HSF, I wouldn’t recommend anything short of a custom aluminum angle bolt-down mod with the Danger Dan or the EK mounting kits. As far as I know, there is any off-the-shelf solution for this.

If so, can anyone give any thoughts on using this "genuine" mounting kit instead of a modded one?

I actually just ordered one from Petra's. They are still out-of-stock at NewEgg.

I believe it's intended as a LGA 478 to LGA 775 adapter, not a bolt-thru kit for a LGA 775. I'm interested in the backplate, but I expect to provide my own fasteners.

It looks good to me. Just watch the torque on the clips so you don't crack one like lad did.

Unlucky you! Hope that doesn't happen to me. I am not good at metal cutting. Won't be too happy to make my own new clips.

I am going to install 2 of these 120mm Scythe fans (1200rpm) on the Infinity heatsink for a push-push installation.
Hope that isn't going to be too heavy...

I don't think is the weight or pressure so much as the twisting caused by the force on the tip of the clip, (1) causing a rotation of the thin "arms", (2).

If you tied the two clips on either end of the heatsink together with wire, (3), (be careful not to cause a short), you could probably reduce the risk of clip failure. (Of course, if there are capacitors in the way it's a non-starter).

What if I use the much stonger (or so it seems) S478 clips coming with the Scythe Infinity?
Because my backplate-set is in fact a S775 -> S478 converter:


Would that be stronger or as strong as a scpring/screw mount??

edit: I just tried but it won't fit because the bar between the upper-things of the backplate is conflicting with the Infinity clips...
I am thinking about cutting the bars away, but I'm not sure it will remain strong enough.

edit 2: I have cut away some material to make the metal S478 clips of the Infinity fit. I broke one bar on one side, but glued it together.
I am going to try out if it works.

edit 3: It doesn't seem to fit perfectly, so I am going for the screw-mount

edit 4: I have lapped my E6600 today but my temp idle is 43 C (in bios after 20 minutes or so) that is worse than I excepted and am going to accept.
I pressure mounted it and lapped it, what did I do wrong?

edit 5: core temp is 33 C idle (*not* overclocked), but my xfx mb-n680-ish9 has stopped working all-of-a-sudden and I am _very_very_ unhappy about it.

It looks like it is 1 of my memory dimm's that causes the motherboard not to post. Have to send it back. Hopefully it is resolved quickly by a new dimm, although it is a set of 2. deep link
So before then, no oc for me. Current idle temps: TCaseMax 85 C and 33-34 C cores. (Core Temp Beta 0.9.0.92)
I use the push-push set-up suggested in previous posts in this thread.

Just got my hands on probably the strongest backplate you can get without making your own ... it's the one that ships with the Asus Silent Square cooler ...
and *man* is it strong, I can't bend it at all with my hands.

My current modified infinity is not using a backplate and so I'll be redoing the mount soon with the inclusion of the above piece.

I wish there was a way to measure the pressure, cause I'm sure the MB will never bend using that backplate. Just don't want to punch a CPU sized hole in it ...
