In my opinion it wasn't clearly stated that Radeon HD 2900 XT lacks UVD. And since UVD was introduced as Radeon HD 2000 series feature it was really easy to draw a conclusion that R600 also includes it. Europe and US had different presentations so there might be some slight changes in the slides. AMD also didn't show ALL the slides in presentations which are included in PDF-files they gave to press. PDF-files also have some different information than the slides they displayed at Tech Day. Confusing?

What different information? Regarding the specs, or features? Did you seen this slide:

Please translate your article on English (including the graphs)

    P.S

that hxbox360 HD-DVD drive that you have reminds me: isn't HD-DVD playback supported on the XB360 via Xenos and its programmable shaders?

Yes I have that slide on paper and PDF.

For example the PDFs state that HD 2400 and 2600 availability will be late June but they gave away paper version of slides which state early July.

As long as AIB change their boxes, there should be no problem. Correct?

Not really. They already sold boxes with that packaging...which is against the law. They must fulfill the sales contract for any online sales, and probably pay a few fines. They might have to pull the product until they can guarantee that all boxes are properly labelled, as GTA: SA had to when the ERSB changed the game's rating.

Inq has a good article regarding R600 & UVD issue. And addresses some of the concerns I had.

It's a sticky because an Xtreme Legend took the time to compile all the information on the issue and made it available to he XS Community weeks before the information went public.

Any other obvious questions you might have?

I believe Sampsa also said no. AMD site officially says 2900xt doesn't have UVD.

EDIT: Looks like that link didn't work, but it is on AMD site.

Sampsa was teh first to mention that this was an issue, and followed up with ATi marketing department, and got official word. I'm following up with Professional Services myself, and Consumer Affairs. It was me that the "ticket" @ ATi website was created for. PLease find the proper link here(directly out of my support ticket form last week):

I am aware that HIS, GeCube and Sapphire printed on their boxes information about UVD. There has been knowledgebase article created to address this confusing issue. I hope this helps:

    ***********************************
737-27824: Radeon™ HD 2900 series - Wrong Information Regarding UVD Support on Retail Box

The information in this article applies to the following configuration(s):
    GeCube Radeon™ HD 2900XT
    HIS Radeon™ HD 2900XT
    Sapphire Radeon™ HD 2900XT
    Windows Vista 32-bit Edition
    Windows Vista 64-bit Edition
    Windows XP Professional
    Windows XP Home Edition
    Windows XP Media Center Edition
    Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

Some AIB Partners indicate UVD (Unified Video Decoding) support on their Radeon™ HD 2900 retail box.

Note: UVD is the abbreviation for Unified Video Decoding and not Universal Video Decoding.

    Explanation:
Radeon™ HD 2900XT does NOT support UVD. Radeon™ HD 2600 and 2400 series will be supporting UVD.

ATI has been advised of this issue and is currently communicating with AIB partners. Any updates will be published when they become available.

It's funny, becasue at first even ATI's support agents said UVD was present in R600, so as much as AMD wants to place blame on board partners and others, even thier own employees weren't notified of the change, but they were at some point told that it DID work.... Also note that the R600 driver DOES HAVE REGISTRY KEYS FOR UVD...SET TO DISABLED!

Now ya'all know why R600 was REALLY delayed...(uh yeah, full product launch was my line, you AMD bastids!!!).

nVidia didn't get hit in Canada for thier "video acceleration not working" issue, so were able to lump all the claims into class action lawsuit, for the most part. Things don't work like that here in Canada...far greater problems are in store for AMD over this.

Have you read Sampsa's post? He actually provides all the information showing that R600 doesn't in fact have UVD, whilst all reviewers tried to say that it did... which has now been proved by AMD in the link above my post

Catalyst 7.5 drivers are out. I tested again -> no benefit from hardware acceleration with VC-1 and hw accelerated MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) playback is still corrupted with Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra.

When I asked about this from AMD, they replied: "HD decode acceleration will be enabled in the upcoming Catalyst release (7.5), which should become available in the next few days"

So, it's shipped with UVD disabled? WTF?

Why would they wait till a newer Catalyst to enable UVD?
"To exist in this vast universe for a speck of time is the great gift of life. Our tiny sliver of time is our gift of life. It is our only life. The universe will go on, indifferent to our brief existence, but while we are here we touch not just part of that vastness, but also the lives around us. Life is the gift each of us has been given. Each life is our own and no one else's. It is precious beyond all counting. It is the greatest value we have. Cherish it for what it truly is."

I wonder if R600 will ever support UVD? Is it me or does anyone else feel like their declaimer basically said that they're no responsible for anything.

If thats the case then surely they where having issues with it prior to release. Hence why they would disable it til they can fix it expecially if its a software fix.

Argh, it's already clearly stated that R600 doesn't support UVD but hardware accelerated decoding through Shaders.
