There is a piece on this on VR-zone ... I put the link in the news section.

    Shame, GTS is unaffected though.

I'd bet that if a mistake was made, it was made on all cards and that's why all cards are getting recalled. Why all cards don't show symptoms is intriguing though....

I wonder if additional folks that have been testing these cards early can confirm this.

I have had the 8800GTX here in Aus for 3 days now, I can confirm that there is a problem from my experiences. sometimes when launching a 3D game or benchmark the card seems to go into a slow mode, about 1/3 of it's usuall speed and there is grafix corruption associated with this slow down in games and 3D benchmarks. It's like the card gets stuck in 2D mode.

The only way I have found to pull it out of it's slow mode is to uninstall/re install the drivers and then it seems to work fine again for a while. In the 3 days I have had the card this problem has happened 6 times so far.

Aside from this when the card is working correctly in 3D the in game preformance is very very good.

Will be getting this card replaced asap with a non broken model for sure.

Is there no 2d/3d process or some registry tweak to force the card in 3D mode like Ati cards have?

Its a resistor problem and is fixed very easily, not a big deal at all.

We heard it is probably due to a resistor controlling 2D/3D switching and that leads to 3D corruption
    that is the explanation

Specifically, the memo states that some vendor (including EVGA) GeForce 8800GTX based cards will generate artifacts and cause the system to restart after 30 minutes to 2 hours of operation.
Other manufacturers are also affected, but EVGA was specifically mentioned as having this problem. Any manufacturer shipping cards based on the NVIDIA reference design is not affected.
The artifacts and crashing are a result of an incorrect resistor value. According to the document, a 50K ohm resistor was installed instead of a 30K ohm and results in artifacts during heavy operation. Nevertheless, the document recommends checking the MOSFET to ensure the proper ones were installed and replace them if necessary
Several other manufacturers, including XFX and ASUS, have confirmed to DailyTech that their GeForce 8800GTX cards are unaffected and will ship at launch without problem.
basically, this is a very small problem, and is very localized, and will be easy to fix, and is not a big issue, considering this is before the card even launched... while some companies are already trying to sell them, they are selling them before the official launch date.
seeing as how this problem was caught early, I see no reason to assume this would delay the launch, or assume it's a big problem, with other companies already stating this issue is not happening in thier cards, but more specific to EVGA cards... which EVGA does have a week or so to recall, and get new cards out, which for a company, thats enough time to make the second wave of product to the market atleast.
so this doesn't appear to be a big deal...

but most certainly, this will get blown out of proportion, as lots of people, just like creating drama over nothing, then others dont bother reading around, and get thier info from rumours and such.

plain fact is.. this isnt really a big deal.
its a very small problem, that was from mainly 1 company, but might effect some other companies, and it's before launch, so its being recalled from shipping... not from actual customers hands... well, not many atleast.

"The command and conquer model," said the EA CEO, "doesn't work. If you think you're going to buy a developer and put your name on the label... you're making a profound mistake."

Good way to find out who sold cards early too, when the affected cards get RMA'ed.

    its because of 50K resistor

Isolated issues with some GeForce 8800GTX graphics cards have forced NVIDIA to stop shipment on some launch cards

A memo published by NVIDIA has circulated through GeForce 8800GTX launch partners claiming some initial G80 cards have been stopped from reaching resellers. Parts of this memo were republished on Bit-Tech earlier today.

Nevertheless, the document recommends checking the MOSFET to ensure the proper ones were installed and replace them if necessary.

EVGA has released a statement to DailyTech claiming "EVGA has been working very closely with NVIDIA to correct an error in an early BOM list for internal testing, sample boards and a few review units. There is no issue with production boards and this will not delay the launch."

Several other manufacturers, including MSI, XFX and ASUS, have confirmed to DailyTech that their GeForce 8800GTX cards are unaffected and will ship at launch without problem.

DailyTech previously explored the performance of NVIDIA’s upcoming G80 GeForce 8800GTX. The card used did not exhibit artifact or restarting issues.

Mine does the exact same thing, but it would start running at like 5fps, way slower than 1/3 speed. The only way to fix it was reinstall the drivers. I will definitely be returning mine and getting a new one.

This is the way to fix this problem.

    Location of R520

    Replace R520 with 25.5K resistor
