With a nice overclock it's keeping up with a stock 670 and in one case beating a 7970 GHz Edition (3DMark 11). Overclocking is castrated as with the rest of the 600 series though, it seems NVIDIA is trying to push extreme overclockers towards AMD. This card is beating out the GTX 580 and GTX 460 SLI on about 85 % of tests.

In this thread I see a lot of misunderstanding on the way GPUs are designed or just people putting together specs they want with disregard to what is available.
I would say maybe under stock conditions but for the most part they are trading blows. Currently according to hwbot, the gtx 680 has the top score(single card) in 3dmark 06, 3dmark vantage p and 3dmark 11 p. These are among the most popular benches right now.

What is holding back the gtx 680 series the most is the pcb these cards are simply not up to the overclocking challenge. To make many of these records, kingpin and Shamino had to heavily mod the card, more so compared to what I have seen in the 7970. Not every extreme overclocker has a mod king like Shamino with them, so breaking records tends to be more difficult. These PCB actually do matter as most of the records with the 7970 have been achieved with lightning series.
