As snipe said, all heatsinks need air over them to remove the heat. Otherwise they are passive and those chips on the 4870 can't do with just passive cooling.

Every case out there should have some sort of airflow, even if you're running WC you are going to need airflow to move the hot air out of the deadspots that are in your computer (I think there are typically 2 areas where warm/hot air accumulates inside a tower case).

Now does the fan have to be right on top of iandh's kits? That is the question.
