Why would they want to buy AMD? The CPU part is nothing but a hole to throw money into forever and obviously they would have to sell off the ATI part, and anyone that would buy ATI could only be a stronger and better funded company than AMD making Nvdia's life on the GPU front only more difficult.

Besides, if AMD dies and takes ATI with it then any attempt to move into the GPU business by Intel would be very likely seen as an attempt to leverage their CPU monopoly to generate another monopoly, something that would generate huge regulatory headaches. Nvidia would be better insulated from competition on the GPU front if AMD dies. Again, why would Nvidia want to buy AMD?

Anyway, AMD's x86 licence has a clause in it making it non-transferrable. There are some questions as to whether such clauses are enforceable or not, but at a minimum it would be a huge legal battle with an uncertain outcome. Once again, buying AMD makes no sense for Nvidia.
