Running any other games would results in errors, or worse, BSoD. Since we know from the previous test that SLI needs to be enabled for maximum performance, yet Intel chipset based boards do not support SLI, we might be looking at a compatibility issue here.

It was then the GeForce 9800GX2 moved to the Striker II Formula platform, where it managed to perform all tests. On the other hand, the 3870 X2 maintained its stability on both platforms. We have to give credit to AMD on its compatibility advantage. In conclusion, we would advice those considering the 9800 GX2 to get a Nvidia chip based motherboard."

The guys who brought us the first GeForce 9800GX2 has followed up with a review of the GeForce 9800GTX. And guess what? It's slightly faster than a slightly lower clocked GeForce 8800GTS. Unfortunately, the review only holds NVIDIA cards; GeForce 9800GTX vs. 8800 Ultra, 8800GTX and 8800GTS. Without any Radeon card, it gets kind of flat, but still shows with the utmost clarity that, at stock frequencies, GeForce 9800GTX is not a necessary upgrade for anyone who already owns a GeForce 8 series card.

gx2 is sposed to 'debut' at ~600usd vs 3870x2's ~400+usd

single 9800gtx oc should close the gap on 3870x2 stock
    http://forums.anandtech.com/messagev...readid=2147532 - some 3870x2 reviews with fps...

if gx2 works (drivers?????????????????) it could be a monsta performer!

30" res is where you 'need' that 3870x2 or gx2...... i reckon.

g80 or g92 cards will come very close to 3870x2 , imo, at yr normal res of 1280x1024 16x12 and 19x12....or so the review charts indicate to me....8800gt ftw for shear value power!!
    3870x2 is king ...for now.

First of all, we already have fast GDDR4 ( and GDDR5 ) RAM that can give us more than the "required" bandwidth combined with a 384BIT BUS.
It also costs a lot in transistor count.
384BIT and faster RAM = cheaper, efficient, and easier to manufacture.
BZ et al. are right about the bus width; 2900 series proved that much. Though I would like to see more RAM on this card. 768 seems about right for today's games on 'high-res'.

Good point re. transistor count and costs too.

these thing are going to clock like CRAZY!!!!!
This is the highest binned gddr3 on the market, going into these things, people have the mem up to 2400mhz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't wait to get one.
thank you nvidia for releasing an gtx that isn't rediculously overpriced like the 8800gtx.
As Los Alamos director J. Robert Oppenheimer watched the demonstration, he later said that a line from the Hindu scripture the Bhagavad Gita came to mind:
"I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."
Test director Kenneth Bainbridge in turn said to Oppenheimer, "Now we are all sons of b**ches." wiki
