    Baby phaser!

I know this doesn't have to do with anything phase related, but I mainly post in here, and wanted to share something with you guys. In march I found out that I was going to be a new daddy! We found out at 20 weeks that it is going to be a boy! The next day my wife got the phone call. My son has what is called hypo plastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). The left side of his heart never developed. He will need a series of 3 open heart surgeries 3-6 days after he is born, 4-6 months old and finally 3-5 years old. They move the aorta from the left side to the right side of the heart and after the surgeries his heart will be re-plumbed to use only the one side. We are going to be delivering at University California San Francisco. The induction date was set for Oct.8th but he seems to want to come out even earlier so we have to go there Tomorrow. Keep us in you thoughts and if you are the godly type any prayers are appreciated. Thank you and wish us luck.

Good Luck, 2long. As a matter of fact, I am sitting in the hospital right now waiting out some complications with my wifes pregnancy. Nothing as serious as your situation. What is his name?

Here is some info for the curious. This peticular defect only occurs 1 in 10,000 births.
Edit: I forgot, he may be blue for the first 4 months.

It just seems ironic that a refrigeration engineer with lots of knowledge about plumbing makes a plumbing mistake...
Then again, the toughest project an engineer will face is building another engineer...

Just read through those information pages there 2long4u, I'll pray for your son. The thought of the hearth effectively working double-time due to only having 2 of 4 chambers is mind boggling. The things they can do in the operating room are phenomenal, maybe one day they can fix my shoddy memory

I wish your Baby Phaser and you good faith and a strong heart. I will do some praying for you (I dont do it regularely but as I havent done anything bad lately I hope it will be heard).

As you for sure have researched on the net already, survival has greatly improved over the last 20 years. I did a little search on pubmed myself and found a retrospective study from melbourne showing a massive increase of survival rates from 21 to 77% due to the now performed 3-stage operations and the much better peri-operative management. I included the study as attachement.

    Regards,

Ok we went to the hospital on friday. They turned on the potosen to get the contractions going and then found out there was no room in the pediatric ICU. So we left the hospital and had a great time in San Francisco. We returned on monday.

Caleb was born Oct. 9th at 6:30 AM (what a long night). We delivered in the OR and he was passed into another room via drive through window ( both rooms were sterile). He is on a resperator now to control the ammount of O2 he gets. His O2 levels are really good right now. He may have his surgery Thursday or Friday, but if he keeps doing as good as he is it will be next Monday or Tuesday.

My friend in middle school had gone through that surgery at birth. She could still whoop my ass at hockey. The scars were still pretty there, but other than that, she was pretty normal.
