The HD 5870 is described on most sites as the high-end single GPU card. The HD 5850 is usually described as the mid-range or performance level card.

I doubt the top prices are HD 5850 cards, when PowerColor published this:

    PS
For example, would you describe the GTX 260 as nVidia high end card.
Only problem is that 5850 is supposed to be a Cypress card. So if Cypress = high end then 5850 = high end. I believe AMD sees it like this:

    Hemlock: ultra high end (4870X2/4890)
    Cypress: high end (4870/4850)
    Juniper: performance (4600-series)
Cedar + Redwood: mainstream and entry (4500 and 4300-series)

As for me, I'm really lookin forward to see what ATi brings to the table! My current 4870 is going well, but I would happily retire it if the 5870 turns out to be as awesome as they're saying .

I recall my 9800 Pro being pretty good as well. Strange how memory works like that.

Actually, my little brother still has a 9800pro (flashed to XT). It handles COD4 decently enough for its age. Not bad for an old relic of a card

He's trying to upgrade though, so trying to sell it. Not easy to find someone who still uses AGP anymore these days

    I used Nvidia for years. I had a Ti 4200 8x, 6800GT, 7800GT, 8800 GTS 640, 8800 Ultra etc etc.

The 4870X2 came out and I jumped ship rather quickly. I couldnt be happier with that card!

It's nice to have preferences and some loyalty, but I just want what's best.

    New info:-

"....And the Cypress shader count is...
cene was one of jaws hanging down and people almost falling backwards into the snowy ground. The only question at that point was, could TSMC make them on the 40nm process?

The real question that everyone is speculating about is the shader count. It is 1600 for Cypress, 800 for Juniper, going down from there. If clocks stay at their targets, more or.."

It would be pretty sad if ATI's new generation GPU wasn't faster than nvidia's old generation. 285 prices haven't dropped yet, because as you should take note, RV870 parts are not for sale yet.

I will be glad if the price of the HD5870 is at $399 or less, that will mean Nvidia will have no choice but to lower prices on their current cards including the GTX295, assuming the HD5870 is better than a GTX295. How can that be bad? I mean if you have to have the latest and the greatest then the price shouldn't be a big deal for you, but think about all the bargains that will be available on current gen cards. I for one one love to see the GTX295 in the $300 to $350 range or a GTX285 in the $200 price range. If the price is too high for you then wait till the GT300 series launches and pick up an ATI card then. Consumers have been winning big time in my book with this price war between AMD and Nvidia.

yes but with your logic, if 5870 price is lower, current price of nvidia cards will go down even more
