    Red face Project: Raistlin

hi xs. i've been a silent admirer and pupil of the great builds from this forum. i registered for quite sometime but only got activated yesterday. so finally, i can post and share with you my first attempt at water cooling. most of the techniques i learned from the other worklogs here, so please pardon me if it seems that i have copied them off you, i will give credit to whom credit is due.

all comments/advice are welcome. looking forward to your expertise in my rookie attempt.

    just a short intro...

i assembled my 'new generation' pc several months ago but it was such a rushed and sloppy job, that i never really got to document it and have a proper worklog. it was mainly to have my own pc and not abuse the laptop that i got from work. hehe. the rig evolved to what it is currently after being poisoned continuously (haha)... but kidding aside, i wanted a workhorse of a computer for internet, video, gaming, music and folding.

why name the rig, raistlin? naming the rig i guess is as important as the project itself. so i had to have some awesome name... when i was younger, i used to read dragonlance novels. raistlin, is a character in those series. he is a wizard that started out sickly and weak but eventually became powerful. not that i aim to have the most powerful rig, but rather because he used to belong to the red and black orders of magi, which are the basic colors that i want to use for rig. hopefully, the system would be fitting to the antihero that it derives its name.

what's up with those hardware? i have to admit, i'm not an overclocker nor a hardcore hardware nut. when i initially thought about assembling my own pc, i only wanted to use it for basic purposes as mentioned earlier. however, when i found out about folding@home, i became more interested in upgrading and making the pc better for that purpose. and since folding seemed more efficient using the gpu client, i thought it was better to have multiple gpus rather than multiple cpus (which was either having a skulltrail or multiple pcs running at the same time); that should explain the numerous gtxs in my system.

why go watercooling? having a minimally overclocked cpu and 3 gpus running can turn my case into a mini oven in a few minutes. haha. with fans blowing at my right, i think i am slowly losing my hearing. my main aim is to keep my hearing and the right side of my body from being cooked.

wtf folding!? i found out about folding@home when i was reading magazines regarding pcs when i was researching on building my pc and eventually caught on when i joined vrzone, since i am based in singapore this was the local forum with the best information about getting pc stuff locally. i guess folding eases the guilt on buying so much hardware and using up electricity (haha)... in exchange for contributing to the research on protein folding which i hope would help in finding cure for diseases. after my dad lost a brave battle against cancer last july 2008, i am more determined to do what i can to help fight this dreaded disease.

so what's up with all this blah blah? haha. nothing, just me mumbling. it's my first worklog! cut me some slack why don't ya... haha. let's get on with the project...

big appreciation goes to the online shops that provided most of the things for the watercooling. especially those that i have bugged forever about compatibility and measurements! haha.

hopefully, this would be a successful project.
    thanks for tuning in.

    build pictures

parting shots of the current setup.

as for the next build... it's going to be the same hardware as now, except that it would be watercooled.
hopefully, my fear of putting water system inside the pc would not be realized!

starting off with the ek supreme cpu water block

    the contents of the package

checking out the bottom... (reminder: do razor blade test picture! haha)

looks like a good contact with processor when mounted

    disassembled

    acetal vs acrylic top

    closeup of the ridges/fins

performance plate up close... now that's a lot of scratches

the supreme with acrylic top and universal mounting plate

the waterblock with compression fittings... which one is better??? hmmm...

    gpu cooling

i have big expectations on these guys to offload a lot of heat and noise from my current system.
    the ek fc280 gtx waterblocks

box contents... minus the subaru... haha

no that's not the third fc280 in the middle...

the fc280 on the right reacting to a bad joke (poinngg)

    fins up close

    where's the acrylic top?

    whoop... there it is... :P

    added (2008.08.28)

third brother arrives.... black father?!? haha. ran out of acrylic version... oh well

guess this would separate the GTX280 extreme version from the other 2 vanillas... haha

for cooling the rams at the back of the card

    the pumps

    the 'heart' of the system
    swiftech mcp655 vario with ek d5 x-top

    mirror image... sort of

two hearts are better than one? :P

    the control knob

    box contents

    naked

blinged... but unfortunately, the plug and compression fitting cannot fit on top side by side....

would probably use this configuration instead

    feser x changer

    the big bro

    the little bro

extreme close up of the fins with added lighting

group pic... nasty crumple on the 360's box, but thankfully the rad looks ok (no surprises during leaktest please!)

have to test with compression fittings

    the mobo cooling

northbridge waterblock... ek nb s-max (acetal)

    box contents

    dissected

    check1... looks flat

    check2... looks flat still

    no go for compression fittings

southbridge waterblock... ek nb/sb asus-1 (acetal)

    box contents

    dissected

    check1 again

    check2 again

no space for 2 compression fittings

    ek mosfet asus 3a waterblocks

ek sb waterblock cannot fit if 3sli (missed out that info)... have to go air on this one - the enzotech slf-1

    package contents

    flat bottom

also got these for the chipset - microcool chip protector rubbers

    res and other loop accessories

    almost forgot about the reservoir...
    ek multi-option res150 rev2

    box contents

    barbs attached

finally removed the sticker protection on the anticylon

the compression fittings don't really seat nicely on the horizontal holes, will most likely leak... have to use normal barbs

the compression fitting fits well on the bottom hole though... hmmmm

first time i saw them... i knew i had to have them!

ViperJohn ViperCheck Flow Indicator (too bad the third hole cannot accomodate a bitspower temp sensor. the temp probe is too long, it would hit the fins and stop it from spinning.) yes, there are cracks on the faceplate, but ViperJohn is so generous he's sending a replacement foc (eventhough that unit was from pts).

    one for each loop

    closer look

    replaced the cracked cover

    bling on

    tubings, fittings and stuff

    tygon r3603 1/2"ID, 3/4"OD

    looks clear enough...

    here's looking at you...

because i don't trust my cutting skills, i'll depend on this baby to save up on wasted tubes

    chop chop

i will never be able to achieve this clean cut with a normal scissor or cutter

sure do wish the temps of my system won't be as red hot as these guys

nice spouts on these bottles, but not long enough...

    syringe to the rescue!

    assorted barbs and clamps

    attack of the compression fittings

    give me a 'B'...

    dangerden fill/drain port

    assorted fittings

    improving top ventilation

i could only work on the project a little bit at a time...

the top of the cosmos s has a removable cover on top.

but the bottom part of the cover, it has these plastic that were probably there for structural support, but it looks like they restrict some flow...

    ...and they're off

i can feel the hot air more now coming off the top of the case

my second time removing a reference cooler from a graphic card (first time was on a 3870).

    the xfx gtx280 vanilla

    operating table

    almost naked

    stripped

    flat part removed

    fan part removed

    after cleaning - gpu side

    after cleaning - ram side

    waterblock mounted

    another shot

    quality check being done... haha!

Man that's a freakin overload on pictures :P Do you actually get something done or are you only shooting pictures the whole day

BTW This looks like a freakin awesome build, I like the Supreme the best with the Delrin top just as the 280 blocks.

I'm also buying me a EK top for my MCP655 after seeing this sexy thing

But man WHAT A GREAT THREAD

    thanks zw.

haha. i'm sorry, i think i get a bit overzealous when looking at these silicon beauties... can't help but take pics. :P

btw, the ek d5 top doesn't fit on an un-modded undesign 3g universal pump bracket. i found out late when my orders for the mounts came in. the hazards of online shopping and laziness in research. haha.

You have put alot of effort to this?Any ideas if you copy the idea where the gtx waterblock was placed inside stockcooler around it?Cant remember what thread was it but it did look supercool when it look almost default gtx but two fittings popped out middle of nowhere.
That build must cost you alot, enough of that!MORE PICS!

hi N3it1, i saw that implemented twice here in the forum, but i don't think i'll be going down that road. i think i've had enough of seeing the stock cover. haha. as for the cost, well... hopefully after this project, i wouldn't be upgrading for the next 3 years? if i don't get tempted with new tech. i will definitely have more pics!... as long as no one objects to a thread flooded with pics.

will be posting more pics - continuation of the gpu-wb work

    thanks dopestuff.
