Hey everyone, I've been reading these forums for a few weeks now abecause I just built myself a new gaming system with an E6400. Thanks to a thread on this board about the Gigabyte S3 motherboard, I decided to get one myself. Today, I overclocked my E6400 using the F5 version BIOS, which Gigabyte says improves Allendale OCing. Without further ado, here is my info and screenshots (keep in mind this is my first time ever OCing a CPU):
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 L624 @ 8x400 (3.2GHz) 1.32VCore
Gigabyte P965 S3 w/ F5 BIOS
2GB Patriot DDR2 667 4-4-4-12 RAM @ DDR2 800 5-5-5-15 (I have a Q about this later in the post)
eVGA 7900GT @ 525/1400

The only problem I'm encountering is if I try to manually put my RAM timings to 4-4-4-12, the computer will post and go through BIOS fine, but at the screen where it's about to go into XP, it'll just sit there as if there's no boot device (I know this because that happened before haha). Once I change it back, it goes fine. I'm not too worried about a small latency change, but I'm guessing this is just a BIOS glitch.
EDIT: Almost forgot to mention that my heatsink is an Arctic Freezer 7 Pro.

Oh and another thing, when OC'ing... start out with a bit more Vcore than you really need then work your way back down. If it was me I'd be at 1.425 and 2.4Vdimm looking to identify the weak link. You could probably do 430-440ish at 1.43v... but you need to isolate if it's the ram or not.

Well everything works fine unless I change the RAM timings. I might try upping the VDIMM to 1.9, but it's pretty odd since most people dont have problems using stock voltages with this RAM. As for now, I'm going to run the comp as-is for a while and see how it does for 24/7 use. In a week or so, I'll start doing my final tweaking. Thanks for the info.
EDIT: What do you guys recommend as a max safe voltage for 24/7 use?
one more update:
I'm just starting the orthos 2nd part of test now, but so far so good...I''l post an update as it goes longer if you want....let me know.

hey i have been stock at 422x8 for a while...Right now I am at 425x8, voltage at 1.425 (vdropp down to 1.38) and Corsair 6400 at 2v...
I think the trick was to drop my RAM timings a tiny bit - from 5-5-5-12 to 5-5-5-15. That seems to have fixed my reboot in Orthos after about 5 mins.
So if you got the cheap Corsair try loosening timings a bit maybe...
This proc is so bleeping impressive. I am stressing it by running Orthos at the same time as I play Call of Duty 2 - and guys I have NO FPS DROP!
THAT'S INSANE!
Back to hunt the flag...

@mascaras, seeing your post and updating DQ6 BIOS to F6 I thought I would try it out. It ran 438@3.5GHz 1.42v as you. Stress dual prime95 sml/lge ffts and IT rebooted after <10mins. Cores hit 60c@28 ambient.Originally Posted by mascaras

@ANP and TheGoat Eater everyones overclock varies from chip+mobo+ram combinations.
But a safe bet would be 3.2Ghz to 3.4Ghz
If you take a close look you will notice what the Minimum Overclocks are.

Right now, I have 2GB of Patriot 5300 ram overclocked to 438 FSB 4-4-4-9 STABLE (for 12 hours on the ram .... CPU I did before with small FFTs) Now, when I overclocked to 3600 Mhz on my CPU, the small FFTs worked for 12 hours ... however, the RAM isn't stable at 4-4-4-9, 4-4-4-12, 4-5-5-12, or 5-5-5-10 .... what should I do? It won't boot if i increase the voltage to 0.3 (apparently 0.2 is the max now on the DS3)
I am sorry for asking a stupid question but these Intel chips are still to me and wanted to sound my question but I have booted into windows at 3.7 and am now benching at 3.5 but it likes 3.2 a lot better I think - gonna slap a silverstone 120mm fan on my scythe infinity and "GO FOR GOLD" -lolOriginally Posted by Vikodemous

Your using e6400 default multi of 8x right?
This may sound nutty, but, here's why, when lowering multi it affects straps in the cpu, just like when you use a ram divider e.g. 2:3 or 4:5.
Now think for a moment, the only cpu in the series x6800 (super expensive) can clock up and down whereas the others only down, So, that means with x6800 you can change multi up and down without effecting NB, SB, FSB etc.
But, the others (e6300 etc.,much= less costly) can only clock down, as well when you clock down with these chips it directly effects NB, SB, FSB etc., which means solve problem #1 ( changed FSB clock), but what about problem #2 (the change #1 changes the NB clock), which effects problem #3 (the ram clock).
So go to windows desktop and right click properties on My Computer and see what the Cpu clock is, this might surprise you.
imagine 4.5ghz (4x566Mhz in Sandra 1:1 = 4x566 = x2 = 4.528ghz)
and
ddr-1132 ram (4x283 in Sandra)
HOLY CRAPPOLA!!!!!!!!!!
