GeForce 7800 GTX 512 MB overclocking

Ok, 512 MB version of GeForce 7800 GTX is coming soon but unfortunately this time NVIDIA refused to provide me samples for overclocking. Explanation was that this is a follow-up product and their budget is different. How ever the fact is that this will be NVIDIA's most powerful graphics card in the market and it will be a seriously contestant for Futuremark's Hall of Fame top spots. I'll try to get my toys different ways.

So this time there will be no early testing from me to help fellow overclockers like with 7800 GTX SLI and Radeon X1800 XT.

Here are some rumours about the card (mainly from The Inquirer)

    - Two slot heatpipe cooling solution (from Quadro)
    - High clocks and Samsung 1,1ns memory? 600/1800?
    - 512 MB of memory
    - A little bit different PCB
    - New BIOS

NVIDIA sent only one enthusiast sample so I've a feeling that someone here in XS will provide the early information, but who?

I don't think OPP or macci would be the one, maybe kinc.

Sampsa, I hope their 'explanation' is true. You did make a pretty big splash with the XT.

I'll continue testing both NVIDIA and ATI hardware since that's what I've been doing several years already. Lets see how it goes with next generation

    Shamino is definitely my guess

assuming its still 0.11 process(can't imagine it being anything but) clocks, on air/water might not get much higher than stock. the stock cooler on the xfx one looks like a beast of a cooler, probo best gpu cooling design i've seen, thicker fan for better pressure/airflow, 2 slot design, heatpipes going both directions from centre of card to left and right, 4 or 6 of them. also inq said xfx clocks were at 1750 and 580 core IIRC, being xfx those are probably over stock numbers, so you might guess 550/1700 on the mem. but being as the memory is really only rated for 1500Mhz maybe other companies will have that as default speed?

other than clocks, price it will appear at in retail with not many about x1800 prices have dropped a lot here since release, day of release cheapest were £330ish for a few days , then £300-330 for a week and a week later you could get them for £260. at the mo the xt's are listed at £470 for the 512mb version, i'd guess after 2weeks or a month that will get down to closer or even below £400. prices of these cards is way to high though considering what they do. one top end card last year of last 3 years would give you 1600x1200 in top aa/af settings, now a single card can't do that in new games , close, but not there

I managed to get one GeForce 7800 GTX 512 MB card, although not from my contact in Santa Clara as I mentioned earlier. You can expect some overclocked results from me soon after the release date! Lets see if I manage to break my current Radeon X1800 XT single card record which is 12419.

Sham hit at 810/1520 11.9k does the ram really make so less a differenace that you only gain 500 points from 810/1520 to 882/1952

Sampsa showed his X1800XT result. A 7800GTX at 882/1952 would score well over that.

What i like about that is the fact nvidia said there budget is different.

You'd think it would be pretty healthy, selling Video cards and over 300quid, when they cost about 30quid to make.

Probably because it says ATITool in the screenshot. Unless that also happens to work on GTXs.

And a GTX at 882/976 would produce a score much higher than 12.4k...

Please read my previous posts. That 12419 3DMark05 score was done with LN2 cooled Radeon X1800 XT:

Well, the ram is actually rated for 1800mhz...It's 1.1ns samsung ic's. They're likely the end of the GDDR3 dynasty, next round will be all about GDDR4.
