    EVGA GTX 460 locking up.

I'm having major problems with my EVGA GTX 460.

In Windows 7 it locks up at the Welcome screen and if I restart the computer, about 90% of the time I'll get no picture.

This is on a fresh install of Windows 7 with the latest drivers from Nvidia's site.

If I put the ATI card back in, it will boot right up.

    Specs...

    EVGA GTX 460 768mb
Gigabyte 890XA-UD3 Rev 1.0 (latest BIOS)
    AMD 1090T X6
    4gb OCZ 1600mhz DDR3
Corsair 750 watt PSU. (Single 60 amp 12 volt rail).

    Faulty card?

As quoted by LowRun......"So, we are one week past AMD's worst case scenario for BD's availability but they don't feel like communicating about the delay, I suppose AMD must be removed from the reliable sources list for AMD's products launch dates"

That sounds like a messed up card to me. One way you'll know for sure is to install it on another machine..

It's likely a BIOS issue. Contact EVGA and ask a new BIOS.

Hmmm. I have same issue w/ my Gigabyte 768MB GTX460. But it doesn't lock up every time. Maybe about 50% of the time. Now that I think about it the lock ups definitely did start just after I threw the GTX460 in the machine.

Glad to see I'm not alone. I've been reading for the past few hours and it appears quite a few people are having problems with the GTX 460s. Most of those problems are what we're describing, lock ups and no boot issues. Very weird.

Yes. The issue may be many, not properly flashed etc.., like I said, contact EVGA first and tell them about it.

I would agree the problem was vBIOS related. A updated vBIOS would surely of fixed the problem. My GTX460 1GB suffers no monitor picture @ boot a lot and 90% of the time doesn't boot on a restart with my PC, however I've tested the card in another system and it doesn't suffer those boot or restart issues at all. Deffinately a vBIOS problem.

there are mainboard bios compatibility issues as well with 460s, just as there were with every new gen of vgas... really beats my why ati and nvidia find it so hard to follow specs or at least send a sample or two to mainboard makers to make sure they actually work in all systems

make sure its not a driver issue tho, uninstall any and all ati drivers and get one of those driver cleaner tools to make thats not it...

ATi never seem to have a problem. 5830 I tested worked great.. well.. as great as a 5830 can work. If the vBIOS KFA sends me doesnt sort the bootup / restart issues out, I'll be harassing Asus on a epic scale. Especially after them blindsiding me after my 2nd reply to them saying I'd already done everything they asked me to.

Definitely not the case for me. I had to unplug the display from my HD5970 on cold boots or else the videocard wouldn't be recognized.

Thats pretty odd, but by and large ATi are much better than nV at that kind of thing. I better get a reply from asus tomorrow about my issue. Last 3 weeks or so I've spent £330 on hardware and I won't be happy if I have to spend more money to fix something Asus can do with a BIOS update

    ati had issues too...
single vgas usually work for ati, but dualgpu or xfire seems to cause issues every time they launch a new architecture...

    Dual GPUs are different. My point is ATi never seem to get anywhere near as many compatibility problems with "standard" cards as nV do. I mean come on.. look at the GTX460s, its a single GPU card and you would think nV could get it right and ensure there isn't any compatibility problems with at least the main chipsets and big manufacturers. So, IMO, heres a basic QC test they should of done prior to GTX460 launch;

    Check compatibility with X38, P45, X48, P55 and X58 chipsets.
Send GTX460 samples to Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, Foxconn, and equally big manufacturers such as them to ensure compatibility on launch.

Simple process, and surely not very hard to do?

I recieved my Gigabyte GTX 460 on Tuesday, and had finished reading this thread before I had installed my particular card. I was very glad to see that I was not being affected with this issue, that was until this morning. I had turned my computer on when I got in from work and while Windows loaded in the background my dual screens remained pictureless. The computer locked and was unresponsive. I rebooted via the front panel reboot button and got no picture during post. The system then reset itself and finally the picture came back on. I think what I am experiencing is similar to what you guys are. Very annoying and confusing indeed.

    The bottom line verdicts I've come to after a LOT of testing are as follows;

    - Theres compatibility problems with how certain mainboards initiate the graphics adapter at POST / restart
    - A new vBIOS is required.

I raised the issue with KFA, but they said they hadn't heard of this issue and sent me a copy of the vBIOS already on my GTX460 to see if reflashing it would work. It didn't of course.

yeah, on that i can def agree...
i wonder why ati tends to get this right more than nvidia... maybe ati does more in-house testing with different boards, i remember hearing that from somebody at ati... they have at least one setup of the 50 or so most common boards and make sure all is fine. it seems nvidia doesnt do a lot of in-house testing, as there are many new vgas that launch and wont even boot or post in some boards.

I also have a 460 that locks, mine is a reference 460 768mb from MSI. My card only crashes under loads, never locks up or doesn't post. I've tried flashing the bios with no luck. I'll try different mobo's when I get a chance. I have a 2nd identical MSI card that runs fine though so I think its a card issue.

Makes a lot of sence. Not one of the ATi cards I've owned have I ever got a problem with. nV really do need to test more. If I knew about these 460 issues before I got one I would of left it a couple months.

99% chance thats a false positive. I know theres nothing wrong with my GTX460 (tested in a M3N78.. nVidia chipset. Hows that for a coincidence? ) yet every 8-10 restarts (at most) my GTX460 will fail to POST in my M2F. I tested this in the M3N78 and it rebooted 20 times without incident.

Anyone hear of a possible solution/fix for this? Anyone feel anything will ever come around? I am still experiencing pictureless posts, lockups during the Windows loading logo etc, very annoying.
