Exclamation EK Waterblock shorts out GTX480

    http://www.ekwaterblocks.com/index.p...t01returnid=17

    Dear valued customer,

Some users reported problems when booting GPU.

We on the other hand experienced no problems during tests, therefore we could not predict that kind of problem during designing the blocks.

However we have made a simple yet effective solution.

Anyone experiencing same problem, please contact our support and we will send you PVC washer for metal reinforcer.

Another solution is also, that you simply remove metal reinforcer (which is not mandatory for installation, only optional).

    Thank you for understanding.
Good to see EK noticed this early and have already worked a fix.

Given I've seen something similar happen to my 5970, due to air cooling though (the Accelero Xtreme 5970 - it eats one DVI port) this repsonse seems a little weak; If you short something, you likely damage it. Simply getting a new washing hardly seems a good fix, if the card is fried.

Hpoefully though, no damage was caused...

All Resellers and distributors have those washers now awailable.
And these blocks 470 and 480 blocks are shipped from EK with GPU reinforcer washer since April 27th.
If you don't get it with the delivery, just do not use GPU reinforcer metal plate or ask for the washer at seller or EK support.

The moment you take off the stock heatsink you assume the risk. EK is not responsible. That is just how this market works.

Not responsible for card damage, but irresponsible as a block manufacturer.

By the way, I have 2 of the EK-FC480 blocks and the TIM pads included in the "old" kit are not thick enough for proper contact on the mosfets. Hence the 1.5mm pads included now in the "new" kits. I have used EK blocks on every card since the 8800 (9800GX2, GTX280, GTX295) and this is out of chartacter for EK...

Actually, it's not. If you carefully search the LC section, you'll find a long history of EK's follies and foibles.

You will also find a long history on every other manufacturer. For the most part, I have been pleased by the products I have purchased from EK. The quality and performance is usually very good, but shorting out GPU's is not cool...hopefully this PVC washer will fix the problem.

And those unwilling to risk can buy card with some fullcover preinstalled. (It would make harder to sell card in future upgrade cycle without air cooler though)

I'm confused, does this mean that I should remove my 470s and take that reinforcer off now? Or is something else going on here.

Did you install it with insulating washers ?

    No need to be.
We have also tested with reinforcer and had no problems.
Some are experiencing unstable system and problems with booting.
If they removed the reinforcer or using washer card worked perfectly.
Meaning the card did not damage the card.

I also was in the first batch, so didn't recieve the reinforcer washer and thicker thermal pad. Asked for them and said was sent after my block, but never got them. It's working fine however with out the washer and a fat dallop of IC7 in place of the thick thermal pad.
