    Gigabyte X58A-UD3R high pitched noise

I got a 920, X58A-UD3R system build yesterday. Only the motherboard, CPU and memory are different than my last build, which had a C2D E6600. With the new build, I get a high pitched noise on certain types of activity such as disk activity. I am convinced that it is the motherboard because it's coming from right around the CPU socket, so I'm convinced that it's part of the voltage regulation circuit. I am very sensitive to high pitched noises, so the motherboard is definitely going to need to go back. But I'm not sure if I should try another one of these or go to a different brand/board or what. Is anyone else having this problem?

    System specs:
    Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R
    Core i7 920
    6GB Corsair DDR3
    XFX Geforce 8800GS (carryover)
    Seasonic S12-600HT (carryover)
    Adaptec RAID-3085 (carryover)
5xSamsung F1 hard drives (carryover, and they are definitely not the problem as I checked them as well)
Antec P180 (so the PSU is far away, easy to tell it's not coming from the PSU)

Edit: I found another forum with some people saying it's likely caused by the PSU even if it comes from the motherboard and that Seasonic is more likely to do this. Can anyone comment on that? Here's the link: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum...m/1161911.html

I had the same problem with Ud7, specially at low-Vcore. The combination of LLC (load line calibration)= Standard + disabling the C1E + enabling C3/C6/C7 State, has stopped the wining.

I wrote more about this in GA-X58A-UD7 Thread a few days ago. You can try and see if it helps.

I tried disabling C1E and it worked. I'll check out your thread. Anyone else with more information/ideas, please speak up because I'd prefer to not disable power saving features if possible. Even if it means swapping the board for something else.

    Thanks

I have a little more information. I'd post it in Sam's thread but it seems to be 99% about overclocking so I don't want to clutter it.

    Seasonic S12-600HT:
    C1E on, C3/C6/C7 on = not tested
C1E on, C3/C6/C7 off = really loud noise fairly often
C1E off, C3/C6/C7 on = less loud noise, almost tolerable but alas not
C1E off, C3/C6/C7 off = no noise, but how much extra power is it drawing?

    Antec Earthwatts 430w:
    C1E on, C3/C6/C7 on = not tested
C1E on, C3/C6/C7 off = fairly loud noise almost all the time... sounds almost like a wire rubbing a fan but I checked and it was not (the only fan I had running in this config was the CPU fan and no wire was even near it)
    C1E off, C3/C6/C7 on = not tested
    C1E off, C3/C6/C7 off = not tested

So it definitely sounds different with different PSUs, so I wonder if I could get it to work with another brand like an Enermax or something. But I do want to RMA the board, though I expect all of the X58A-UD3Rs to have the problem.

C1E off, C3/C6/C7 on = less loud noise, almost tolerable but alas not. This was the case for me too, but it stopped when i changed the LLC from "Level 2" to "standard".
Have tried to play with different LLC options too?

I've kept mine at standard and without overclocking or overvolting anything because I am (temporarily) using the stock heatsink still.

I'm getting the board replaced with a straight up swap. If that doesn't fix it then I'm most likely going to go for a different brand. I have the RMA and return shipping label for this one but I'm waiting for the new one to arrive first.

I'm glad I found this thread, as I recently bought a GA-P55 UD4R and I'm hearing a whining sound occasionally. I filled out an RMA form (which has been accepted) but the problem has mysteriously cleared up quite a lot since a few days ago. Like the thread starter said, the noise is coming from near the CPU socket, but I'm not sure if it's the CPU fan. I'm still on the stock fan (had some fun overclocking to 3.7-40GHz, too) and until I replace it I won't know for sure. I could send it back but if no faulty is found it ends up costing me money for postage.

Just a thought -- I'm using a Corsair modular PSU, which I believe is manufactured by Seasonic.

New motherboard (same kind) does the same thing :/ wonder if Newegg will let me return a second one and buy a different brand instead...

Well, it's still a new board with very few reviews on Newegg, so it's probably too early to tell. And it's probably power supply related because when I tried my other power supply, as I mentioned before, the noise changed, though it was still there. I'm torn between getting a new power supply (probably an OCZ Z550 because I want better efficiency and I want to avoid Seasonic since they seem to trigger the noise) and spending more for the ASUS P6X58D Premium.

Please let me/us know what you find with your board and what power supply you find it with.

should have it up and running this weekend, will let you know.
I have a Corsair HX 850 and a PC P&C 1000, and 1200 for power supply options, hope the Corsair works, cause the others are loud. lol

Got the Z550 and with both C1E and C3/C6/C7 on, I think I can hear just a tiny bit of noise... maybe 5% of with the Seasonic tops. Haven't tried the VDroop option thing yet.

all C states disabled, vdroop, off level 1 and level 2 no issues yet, on the Corsair PSU, only at 4.2Ghz though but no noise

I had this same issue with my old power supply. I just assumed it was because my old PSU was so small (500W silverstone). I replaced it with a Corsair HX850 and the noise is still there but it is so quiet you have to have your head inside the case to hear it.

Is this high pitched noise a constant noise no matter what you are doing? Reason I ask is that I just got this board and it is quiet until I load up a game. Once a game starts depending on what is being displayed, I start getting a loud (louder than all the fans that are running) high pitched noise (sounds like electronic noise) or a very hi frequency ticking noise depending on what game is being run.

FeRaL: That usually means a video card (and it could be aggravated by your power supply as was the case with me). In my case, the problem that I had would vary with activity. I didn't even try it gaming.

sounds like normal noise to me... my video card squeals like a pig between benchmarks in vantage... my mobo has a funky ticking noise but all runs well and i cant hear any of it because i have more than 5cfm of airflow in my case...

my suggestion is turn up the speakers or buy a quieter case... Antec P180's were the ish for killing noise back in the day...

most of the squealing ive encountered over the years has been with GFX cards and some PSUs. Only one board squealed for me and the retailer didnt want to RMA due to sequel alone (Asus P5B DLX)

I am yet to test a GFX that doesnt squeal under load

I think i decoded the squeal too...it tells me "OMG OMG dude wtf are you doing to me outch outch turn off the game outch "

What power supply? Like I said above, mine did with my Seasonic PSUs but doesn't at all with my OCZ.

Obviously you're just not sensitive to it. I HAVE a P180 and I could hear it from outside of my room with the door shut. My airflow isn't the highest on the site, but it is already annoyingly loud to me. I am willing to bet that I just have a higher sensitivity to high-pitched noise than you do.

Well, I happened to have an old spare Coolermaster 550 SLI PSU in my closet so I decided to wire it up and see if it was a PSU issue. I'm glad I did. The high pitched squealing has completely disappeared in games. It has squealed a couple times though, mainly when entering the BOIS and tweaking power settings. I will be replacing the PSU as soon a a good deal shows up online.

I just changed vdroop to regular, and turned on c3/c6/c7, c1e off
back on my hx620w since my hx750w blew a capacitor
whining is down to about 90-95% of what it was originally, I may be ok with this once I get the side panels back on my P182

I'm running auto tune right now in the ATI catalyst center and it's making some whining, but it's a bit deeper, not as shrill as the original noise, and if it's only when using heavy 3d graphics like gaming, that's not a big deal - my headphones should easily drown it out
