In general, many prefer the AD700s over the HD555s in that range.

Do you still have the tritton set? They can't be that bad, can they?

I had a mid range set of Trittons and they are AWFUL!!! kinda towards the high end of 5.1 headphones, but they still sounded horrible when compared to even low end stereo headphones.
Rig 1:
ASUS P8Z77-V
Intel i5 3570K @ 4.75GHz
16GB of Team Xtreme DDR-2666 RAM (11-13-13-35-2T)
Nvidia GTX 670 4GB SLI
Rig 2:
Asus Sabertooth 990FX
AMD FX-8350 @ 5.6GHz
16GB of Mushkin DDR-1866 RAM (8-9-8-26-1T)
AMD 6950 with 6970 bios flash
Yamakasi Catleap 2B overclocked to 120Hz refresh rate
Audio-GD FUN DAC unit w/ AD797BRZ opamps
Sennheiser PC350 headset w/ hero mod
Your actually basing your assumption off a frequency graph
Like, your claiming they have similar sound when you haven't even heard one. (not that im disclaiming that, cause they are similar)
Just the way i view it, the 700s are always recommended for gaming over the 555s at headfi.
Also, less bass to me is better, especially for positioning. I much rather hear their footsteps then an explosion/rumble

The 700s are more comfortable, have better soundstage, and have tighter bass. Recommended for gaming, and for folks who like a neutral/faithful presentation. The 555s are more laid back, less comfortable, and have a warmer, bassier sound - more suitable for listening to lounge/jazz than for gaming or for general listening.
The 555s are great phones with a refreshing and unique presentation, but given the choice I'd go for the 700s.

Well if thats the case then you can look at the Beyer 770 Pro which from what ive read has great immersion getting you very involved but lacks in soundstage compared to both of those.
Then again, the OP has not specified and we are just speculating on what he wants. I originally chose ADs cause in most cases thats what everyone suggests

No, but I've listened to both in-shop with my usual "test suite" of Officium (1994), Kind of Blue (the 1997 remaster) and Machine Head (ripped to CD from the 2001 DVD release), and came to the above conclusions. My current phones are the ATH-AD1000s.
Have you listened to the 700s? I'm cautious about passing comment, because this is a very subjective field, but I'm surprised that you could say they have a lack of bass response. They have a tighter bass, and certainly a less "boomier" bass, but definitely not a lack of response. My personal preference is for tight, fast, accurate response, rather than a ballooning, boomy mess - not saying that the 555s have such a response, but it's the opposite end of the spectrum.edit: There is also a difference between having fun in a game, and winning at a game.
The lack of bass response will take away from the whole experience very much.

well to clarify i want a set for competitive gaming and alot of people have hd555's but i knew the audio technicas were really good....i rather hear the lower frequency clicks and footsteps than explosions
CPU: Q6600 @ 3.4ghz Mobo: Gigabyte P35-DS4 CPU Cooler: Tuniq Tower
GPU: ATI HD4850 700/1070 RAM: 4x1GB Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR2-1066 PSU: OCZ GameXStream 600W
Sound card: X-Fi Fatal1ty HDD: Western Digital Raptor 74gb / 320GB Seagate
Display: 22" Gateway HD2200 Headset: Audio-Technica AD700
In that case, id put the ADs soundstage over the HD555s

I've got the 555's (modded to 595's, its a very basic mod, 5mins) and i can't complain at all.
I hear footsteps and that kinda thing clearly even with explosions going on.
By the feel of people's view here its fairly even between your two choices - so let the cheaper one win![]()
