Intel to Retaliate to AMD Phenom II Overclocking Feat, Plans Demonstration at CES '09

Intel plans its own public demonstration of the overclocking capabilities of the Core i7 processors. This, in response to rival AMD achieving an overclock of well beyond 5.00 GHz, and booting at speeds above 6.00 GHz. The engineers at Intel reportedly carried out a large-scale binning of Core i7 processors, to cherry-pick the best performing part. The scale of binning could well be best of 100,000 units.

A chief engineer at Intel, Francoise Piednoel expressed his reservations regarding the 6.00 GHz overclocking feat AMD carried out with its upcoming Phenom II X4 processor last week, saying that the overclocking capabilities of the Phenom II X4 demonstrated do not reflect those of release-grade products, and cannot be replicated in a real-world setting. AMD may have disabled several sensors on the cherry-picked chip used in its demonstration, which facilitated that overclock. In response to this, Intel would be disabling the same sensors, in its special demonstration chip. The demo could be held at CES 2009. The professional overclocker chosen to achieve this feat would be none other than FUGGER from XtremeSystems. FUGGER could be set the task of taking the most desirable, binned Core i7 965 Extreme Edition chip all the way up to a stellar 7.00 GHz, if all goes well.

    what discussion? thread is empty

Well looking forward to this event. Now we disabling some sensors, um should be interesting. Go Fugger

Good news I say. As much as I want AMD to bring something incredible to the table, I hope Intel competes just as well.
In any event it will be interesting to see the results. With any luck the thread won't devolve into a flamefest once more (knock
    on wood).

I' missed everything again. What is there to fight about it

Well i realy do hope AMD brings something nice to the table. And i do have a concern that retail chips will be a far cry from what we heard on that Phenom 2 OC. After few previous tricks like 30K 3dMarK at 3G I'm not so easily convinced. Time will tell when these go retail.

good news, we like to see some competition between the 2, although i don't see why Intel is already blaming AMD for cherry picking, perhaps AMD will do the same again on CES with cherry picked CPU's .

reason for putting a sticky on this ??

I just hope there would be a nice price competition next year, so i can either upgrade to a cheap Yorkfield with 9 multi, or migrating to AMD platform with affordable, highly OCable Deneb and AMD's cheap yet more than decent MoBo. Watered down Nehalem with DDR3 is certainly out of question for me, for its crippled OC feature and the requirement for RAM upgrade -DDR3 is expensive as gold in my country.

So whats the problem again? Make BIOS settings for these 'sensors' and everyone can replicate what AMD did. We have no idea how Denebs BIOS look like it might very well have those settings.

This is quite a weird move by intel if you ask me.

They are not even sure the AMD cpu's were cherrypicked, neither do they know whether or not those sensors were really disabled (AMD may have disabled several sensors), and their response is to cherrypick and disable sensors...

If it is true that AMD has disabled sensors and cherrypicked CPU's, it makes AMD's demonstration hold much less value, as the results obtained in that demonstration are not representative. For Intel to do the exact same tells the normal user not much about the CPU they will eventually be able to buy.

"We think AMD may have done a farced demo and we will now show we can do a farced demo as well."

Of course I congratulate Fugger for being the one to pull this off, and I hope he wil have a great time doing it.

    Wink

I think its pretty senseless.. The Phenom II is going after the current Core 2 Quads, and we know how well E0 steppings overclocks.

Of course it would be quite a challenge to get a Core i7 up to 7GHz..

dude, the world record OCs have all been done with cherry picked components. it's been like that for years. and there's nothing bad about it. it just shows what a chip architecture and manufacturing process can maximally achieve. it's just that people don't put a big YMMV sticker on their screenies

about that "disabling sensors" story.... it would be important to know if AMD just disabled diagnostic Components or important parts like Cache, etc.

Intel hurting bad...man I never thought I would see this again...LOL

Reminds me of kids fighting in the playground though...kinda sad

Intel...you don't need to do this, we all know your stuff is fast
Got a problem with your OCZ product....?

I think Intel doesn't care, Francoise Piednoels ego would be better. I have lost every respect i had for that man.

It would be important to know if there was even some disabled sensors which there is absolutely no evidence as of now, only a bold accusation from DrWho.

Funny what Intel is doing just to be first in terms of performance AND total clocks, even if AMD might not be able to achieve equal performance even with their advantage in clocks. Thrilling race nonetheless.

Don't start again. Fugger will get the mother of all unlocked chips. Why can't you all just be happy for him? Stop the ing.
