MIPs RAM Freezer 4 Issues
I've just added this to my prod log but thought it was also worth a mention in this section as it may help others using similar hardware
MIPs Ram Freezer 4 turned up first thing this morning so i set about getting it fitted but ran into problems right off the bat :S
Basically once i got the stock heat spreaders off the Hynix HYMP512F72CP8D2-C4/Y5 Ram it soon became apparent that the centre processor was 1.2mm higher than the memory chips either side.
Hmmmm........after much head scratching i decided to shim the memory and as luck would have it i had some cheap aluminium heat spreaders which just so happened were 1.2mm thick and already had thermal pads on them.
So i set about cutting eight of them in total (two for each stick of memory) down to 50mm x 15mm which fit perfect.
Just a case of adding them and a little AS5 to the reverse side of the memory and and assemble as normal.
Leaving the actual RAM hex bolts loose so the four individual memory stick could move from side to side in the slots, the whole unit then fitted straight into the board with no problem at all then the hex bolts tightened up.
All in all a bit fiddly but well worth it as it's one of the best machined blocks i've laid eyes on in a long while.
I'll let MIPs know of the issue with this particular RAM so they could maybe machining some heat spreaders for this memory which would be easy for them to do and make life much easier for anyone else in this situation.
Still not linked hose up yet but its been running fine for the last few hours so all is well but looking forward to see if it actually works.
Anyway, a few pictures as usual..........BTW the 3rd but last picture shows the copper/brass version along side the copper/brass nickel plate one i'm using.

wow nice looking ram heatsinks, looks if no need for liquid would really work good under the wet chilled.

You are not alone.
Sure would look nice on my NB/Mosfets loop.

No Al in the water channels I hope. The heat spreaders look like they are all Al.

I did try that but all i had to hand were Danger Den thermal pads which are .5mm thick so there was still a shortfall of .7mm and came nowhere near being close enough for my liking.........seemed pointless going to the extent of cooling the RAM if it wasn't done properly imo.
Its an easy fix for MIPs to make the necessary adjustment and have passed the info on to them
@ IanY - main block is copper and brass and you're right the heat spreaders are aluminium so no actual fluid contact

Somebody has any data on this ramsimk's performance?
Looking the pics it doesn't seem efficient since it has little contact with the ram. Too much adapters.
I would love to see some real world testing like temperatures and FSB achieved before and after MIPS.

Looks like the water channels are all copper and stainless.

Damn that block looks nice, very tempted to WC my ram. How well does it cool the ram? and does the block add alot of restriction to your loop?

gah you need to pull the spreaders off?
CM any chance you can mount with spreaders on?
:\
Is it possible to mount with the spreaders on? The tought of voiding my life time warrenty on failing Tracers is not to my liking.

I just bought that WB too, still waiting to have time to mount my new dual loop rig though
Reading your post was mistaking, thought the block had a problem, while it is the RAM finally
Anyway, thanks for the great photos and feedback on that block
I'd like too, to have some tests on the reached temperatures

Google, my friend...
Ok, here's a review of the v4 of this great WB, looks promising despite the use of those 90° barbs for the review.
It is in german, but easy to understand the graphs

OK, 4ºC difference for a loaded RAM would not affect its overclocking.
Too bad the test did not show if any kind of aircooling ramsink was used for comparison.
In my opinion the MIPS RAM is very nice looking but useless block.

Even if it performs same as air, it is very usefull for me: better case cooling and especially silence with less fans in case. Further more, the block is universal and won't conflict with VGA long cards like many air solutions
If the water moved closer to the RAM modules, the block would be damn restrictive and useless in a multi block setup.
So, this block, shows really great performance in my opinion

Nice looking stuff CM,
But before anyone in the US gets to excited, show me where I can buy any MIPs stuff readily? Last time I checked they did even sell to the US.

caseking.de delivers to the US I think, or directly order at MIPS

Well, all cases need some ventilation, mine get it just by the air moved by the fans on my rad, so I run my RAM with regular ramsinks and they don not get too hot.
You could test the blocks without flowing water. I bet they will have similar numbers just by the heatsinks mounted and regular air flow in the case.
Anyway, if it is working for you who am I to say the opposite?
Just my 0.02 cents. The block looks really nice by the way.

My MIPS temps are around 40-50 where they are 70-80 with no cooling . . .

FB-DIMMs are not DDR2/3. They can dissipate up to 25 watts a stick. Think 100 watts in that area, and then see why they want to try water.
I'm up to 60 watts, and I'm trying to build a water cooler for my RAM. 8 GB in a rendering machine isn't the same as SkullTrail, but it's pretty mission critical.

When you say "no cooling" does it has a regular RAM heatsink with no air flow, bare dimms with no air flow or good heatsinks with airflow?
Did the temp change improve its overclock?

When you talk about buffered ram we may need WC.
But it doesn't change the design of the MIPS. I know somebody can do a better designed RAM block.

I will never run my DDR2 at 1200 with 2.25v without active cooling, that's my reasonable choice...
