Red face Moon & tiborrr playing with 9800GTX

Moon & tiborrr a.k.a. the EastKoast duo is back, this time with 9800GTX.

    System:
    CPU: Intel C2D E8500 @ ~ 1.84-1.86V
    M/B: ASUS P5K
MEM: 2x1GB Crucial Ballistix Tracer PC6400
HDD: 2GB SSD Sandisk Extreme IV SATA2
    PSU: 700W Be-Quiet (= FSP Group)

    Cooling:
    CPU: 2-stage cascade by Sharp (R404a / R1150), powerplant: 2x 1/2HP Electrolux MP14FB
    GPU: single-stage tiborrr's R404a unit, powerplant: 3/8HP Electrolux MP12FB

Problems that occured during the OC session:
    - the temperature sensor doesn't go below 0°C, tends to throttle
    - memory doesn't want to overclock when GPU under SS (~ -53°C on the evaporator) - on air it did 1250MHz+, under SS 1150MHz just barely...
    - clocks worse than any 8800GT / 8800GTS G92 we tested, perhaps due to coldbug?
    - driver is causing stutter-effects
    - new, 6-phase digital PWM, is faily cold when cooled with Vantec Tornado, although not much use of it due to diminished clocking abilities...

Short, two-minute YouTube video will be up shortly

    Results:
All results are the new records in the GeForce 9800GTX category. Jup Pedro Rocha, no fidly mipmap tweak used, only LOD bias range! Runs could be a bit better, we have some 98k 2001SE results somewhere, but we've lost it With LN2 on the CPU 100k could be possible, but with better motherboard, this P5K is crapping out on us. Every day it's PWM is getting worse

    - Same on the 9600GT, throttle has been spotted on the 9800GX2 as well, so I reckon it should be fixable with a bios update.
    - Higher the voltage. With a lot of GF8/GF9 series cards, you need to find the right spot between core and memory mhz. The only way to run above 1G core with my 96GT was by lowering the memory clock. Bandwidth issues maybe?
    - Coldbug at -50°C most likely. Please confirm

I really enjoy to read your threads, dunno why, but they are always nice, now left the movie

I though that 9800GTX could score a little better, but lets see with new drivers. Anyway the results are good, I think I will have to get one too

Massman, i guess i have to agree with your findings, although we had no problems with 8800GTS G92 (1ns Samsung BJ1A), it ran flawlessly even with GPU under ~ -100°C cascade cooler. It could be the new 0.8ns Samsungs causing trouble?

PPInDaHouse, thanks for your kind words... Video is currently uploading to YouTube, should be in an hour or less.

Great results. The stutter and low fps is how I see coldbug on GX2. I am just on dice but with acetone also I see that effect. I have heard of same thing on GTX like you're seeing which is strange since all are G92's. I don't have temp monitor on mine and it's a pain since I am on dice to regulate but all seem to be -45c - -50c or about that range.

    Good job guys .

Lets hope the issues will be done with a new bios, Vince said that it would be published soon soon if i dont remember wrong.

I am sure 100k single card will come from your guys ...

    Keep tearing it up!

We already have like 103.5k singlecard on 8800GTS G92, could be 105k easily if the P5K wouldn't be such a lousy 3D board ("stability" is the word this board doesn't have in it's vocabulary).

    @harleybro: I feel your pain

Thanks to all once again for your support & thank you Oliver for the info on the BIOS update.

Yes its sweet work from you guys ...

And your welcome no prob at all, Vince also mentioned that after what he thinks afaik they got the problem solved at least to -100 or about.

Lets cross our fingers and hope, then we will see these cards fly...

Thanks Oliver Perhaps coldbug could be fixed with adding more caps around the GPU, just like with the HD2900XT? Perhaps they're loosing too much capacitance when under ~ -50°C...

Dont know, i am not into that like Persivore, George and others... but i will start to practice soldering in the near future...

But it might be?, could be cool like Georges 2900xts when he could bench them without cb and just need to insure that the pot dosent get emtpy of ln2...

But i am sure there are others that can answer way more qualified than me on this question.

With appropriate drivers (we used the crappy 174.74), proper VGA BIOS you should be in for a easy ride. Sadly, we had to return the VGA card back to the retailer (had it in for review + some OC'ing) so i don't think we'll improve our score any time soon.
