Nvidia is so banking right now. Since you're already ahead, you use minimal R&D to pump out a refresh a full year after initial release. No new hardware, just a tweaking of what's already working well for them. Normally refreshes are seen after only 6-8 months.

RD790+HD38xx+Phenom will be launched at the same time....
RD790 is definitely hard launch (coz I already have one ), HD38xx will probably be hard launch or with availability to follow within a week and Phenom is a big question mark (for sure available in some quantities mid Dec.)...

I'm quite sure that you haven't checked any "Yorkfield" related threads recently...

    1) SSE4 ( better performance in video encoding )
    2) Some more refinements
    3) Lower power req / less heat generating
    4) Better clocking ( 4.3GHz on air average retail sample for Yorkfield should be there )
    5) Oh well...I'll let you search the XS forums a bit

You think why AMD is holding back RD790 launch? Boards are already in stores but can't be sold till middle of next month....

I read that info somewhere but can't remember now where and who said this, but it was info from AMD close partner...

As for the 9800 series launch, my own logic keeps telling me a 70~80% chance of 1H launch. I wouldn't expect much later than R680 at all, in fact it will prolly be very close I'd guess.

It's been so long since they released a new highend series, they won't wait almost 2 years for such launch again trust me on that one. Why would they be rolling the thumbs when R680 is released when they got the capacity and resources to release a new highend series at most likely at similiar time if need be. My personal best guess is early March.

I'm pretty sure this is the case currently, NVIDIA has 9800 well under control and would be able to ramp up production significantly now or in a month or so at tops but they still want to make as much money as possible on the already cash milking 8800 series (check the nice graph on last page in 8800GT review for a good view over this) as there's lack of competition from ATIs side so why would they release a new series now and competing against themselves? and since they're moving over to 65nm now it only makes sense selling them as long as they sell well to get rid of the leftovers. I'm almost certain this is the case and they're just using their heads to have the best possible strategy from economical aspects rights now and therefore doesn't make much noise about 9800 as the less they talk about 9800 series, the better 8800 series sells altho 9800 series it's prolly well progressed and ready for a production ramp.

They are just playing the waiting game and meanwhile keeping the eyes on every move ATI does and soon as ATI explodes, NVIDIA will jump all sudden from the behind and counterattack heavily. If ATI starts advertising R680 and doing the usual hyping up market thingie let's say around xmas, you can expect NVIDIA to the same a day or two after ATI started and suddenly from having kept mouth shut for a long time, suddenly start flooding with rumors around the net as I'd expect around xmas NVIDIA starts being ready to give up this "hardcore 8800 series milking strategy". This would just be typical marketing moves I'd expect of companies like this.

Can I suggest changing the AMD lettering color to something other than "kill-my-eye-sight" green?

Where do these come in to play with the GTS and the GTX?

There are some benchmarks in the Xtreme News forum. Its a few points behind the GTX, but destroys the GTS.

    Benchmarks here

A figure somewhere around $250 has been tossed around in that thread quite a bit. I havent read any of it other than the first post and skimming for price estimates.
