    Nvidia speeds up 80nm production schedule to beat ATI

    While ATI prepares to roll out five 80nm grahics processor units (GPUs) in November, Nvidia plans to speed up its 80nm-production schedule of by rolling out revised versions of its G72 and G73 chips to compete with the rival, according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report.

    The revised versions of G73 (codenamed G73-B1) and G72, along with the highly anticipated G80, will be targeted to compete with ATI solutions from mid-range to high-end market segments, the paper noted.

    I would have thought g80 would have been 80nm, with the die shrink being down to 65nm.

    -> If you upgrade every 6 months...get G80...if you don't...then wait for G81.

    To beat what? - ATi has nothing at the moment, except those silly news that run on inquirer (a la Fuad).

    It would be downright stupid to release a new rev 80nm 8800 without going to GDDR4 as well. They will likely launch 8900GTS/X on 80nm with GDDR4 the same time R600 comes out.

    Gather all the that is out there right now on the R600, including the fact that anyone can buy an x360 and see what the performance of an r600 will be like (R500 and R600 are very close in fundemental concept)...now double all that information and you still don't have as much info as nvidia has on the r600...Nvidia isn't stupid...it knows whats coming and what it needs to be ready for it.

    Is 80nm the half node process between 90nm and 65nm? If so, I highly doubt G81 will be any smaller than 80nm. At best it will include GDDR4 support as previously mentioned...

    Personally, I won't be upgrading again for awhile after buying the 8800GTX, and unfortunately I can't wait or I'll miss tax season.

    Actually things go something like this:

    - In the last few months ATi's (or AMD's) latest release of X1650 Pro/XT - X1950 Pro/XT was just a way to free their stock, nVidia fallowed the same track but tried to give a preview on their future products whit GF 8800 GS/GTX (they give us a bone (a long bone) to chew for XMAS) and now they try to reinvent the weal ?

    - We all know that on XMAS prices go down, so it's not worth launching a product at this time of year (at least not from the future generation), the demands would be High (major production problems) and the price would be lower - so this is one of the reasons that lead to this delay (R600).

    - What ATi R600 can and can not do, that's another point of view - you are aware that XBOX 360 isn't that expensive if you thing about all the package but this was M$ idea for the general public (ATi's deal whit M$ about the GPU is a different story which doesn't concern us) but on VGA market ATi/nVidia alone have the final word on the price so which as usual doesn't stand up to the performance they give (difference between Mainstream and High-End).

    -Short Story: - it's all about marketing, we all know that ATi's R600 from High-End class will be made for early dreams (few people will afford to buy this things) but the present products or not intended as Big Rivals (you wouldn't be able to compare them whit what's next), they are just pion's on a chess board, one of the big wars (because they'll be more to follow) will be set for 2007, there is no real competition now unless ATi decides to launch a preview like nVidia.

    PS.I don't like this small battles because it's not much to be seen, a few more FPS in Games doesn't get me exited

    I thought X1950 Pro and X1650 were 80nm parts....
