It seems to let you adjust the PCI-E frequency independent of your FSB speed. If you are benching for a 3DMark WR it might come in handy.

emoners: There seems to be a few reports of the on chip digital sensors getting stuck at fixed values on the new E8x00 series. When overclocking it is kind of like driving with a blindfold. As long as you're stable and are getting some decent MHz out of it I wouldn't worry too much.

Mine is Q746A777 and for 4.2Ghz Orthos stable, I need 1.46V (actual).
I can boot into Windows and do Super PI @ 4.4Ghz though but it isn't stable.

It makes me feel I have a poor overclockable chip when almost all of you guys here can do 4.2Ghz at a much lower voltage. Do they pass Orthos? Just to see if mine is really that bad.

Mine - Q748A115 - clocks high as funk but it takes a LOT of volts to be stable over 4.1ghz. For benching, quick runs it's great, but I wish I had just rented it. I have another one on the way and will report differences.

Same with my 745. Seems the 740's are the best for 24/7 high clocks on lowish volts but don't clock as high for benching as the 745s and latter.

I use a program called RightMark CPU Clock Utility. It displays the (VID) voltage ID of your processor so you can compare to CoreTemp.

On the CPU info page it also reads the minimum and maximum voltage values that I think are built into the Intel C2D processor.
Here's how my E6400 looks:

It'd be nice if there was a table showing everyones batch in the first column and then req'd voltages for highest prime stable clock in the next few columns. I guess it's too hard to say if each guy is doing the right thing with his settings etc..

It would be even better to see all batches on the same setup doing the same tests, but that may be idealistic thinking. Wait, wasn't there some thread from a guy who had like five different 8400s and was testing them on the same setup?

Apparently, it's based on one poster and "his five friends". Apparently all of their 8400's died after a week, if I'm remembering the story correctly. The thing that stands out most is the statement that even the guy with only 1.41Vcore had his die prematurely. That sounds like bull, cuz there are people putting far more than that on this very thread, and not a single one has complained of a dead chip.

When one only one cpu died, we could say that it's misfortune or human error!
When 1/2 cpus died and the others get degraded... i would care what he says!

P5B Deluxe, vdroop pencil mod.
1.328v idle, 1.336v load.

pretty weird temp though. 24C roomtemp. idling at 42C and loading at 58-62C. fuzion, mcw60, pa120.2, mcp655. thats hotter than my e6600 heh ill try to remount the block a few more times.

Yup I agree, those guys are not noobs!

That's why I think we must wait and see much more data to see if these things can really survive with 1.4v+. Thanks to all the guys who don't care because your data is worth gold.

It's right there in the spec sheet that max volts for e8000 series is 1.45v vs 1.55v for e6000 series. So people saying yeah I did so and so volts with my e6400 is irrelevant. 45nm may be more fragile. Time will tell but I hope it's not true.

I never wrote that 8 CPU's died . They just degraded . You should read more carefuly next time !

Mainly I reported less Mhz stable . 8 cpu's till yesterday ... 9 today , as another user in a forum here in Greece today reported that his CPU has lost Mhz also.

Also , 3 QX9650 (Hipro5 , Shamino , Victorwang) . You can find the posts here in XS for these CPUs. Also there is one 8400ES that died while benching (ln2) .

A new poll has been opened in thelab.gr today and already 38% voted that they noticed a degradation ... 33% doesn't tried with voltage so they don't know ... and 16% voted that the clocks are the same .
