but it can only get better right? i mean its probably subpar right now because of the chipsets and memory, how about when it gets fully tweaked?

been trying to move from this E6600/650i/8800GTS to a q9450/dfi x48/hd4870 but nehalem is telling me to wait just a few more months... it'll put my current rig to shame
I see it this way: For the work I do in DC it makes sense.
The lesser elec use, the lesser heat dumped into a room that I have to then remove with AC.. Long term it makes sense..
Seeing the difference right now between Harpertown and Clovertown.
Harper runs 10C cooler with same cooling method and at 3404 vs the clovers 3000.
Clover draws 421w vs the Harpers 305w.
Harper generates a solid 34,000 a day in WCG while clover generates a solid 25-26,000 a day.
Less heat, less electrical, much better performance.
A win-win-win IMO.

sensible upgrades depends on what they have right now, some of us don't have an xtremesystem![]()

Now if only x58 supports PCIE 3.0, we won't have to upgrade until the next architecture change.

QFTsensible upgrades depends on what they have right now
Some of us have first gen dual cores and have been happily sitting out the quad core race waiting for something better than a 10% improvement. Simply realize that Yorktown brought 15% or so clock for clock and Nehalem might improve that by 20% or more. That's a lot bigger jump for those who skipped the Yorkies. So yes if you bought a system in 2008, you shouldn't want to get a new Nehalem. It's nothing more than a stepup. But if you have something older, Nehalem should finally entice you to build something new.
2nd thing to remember is that the bulk of Nehalems won't be out till next year. But for those of us who have put off upgrades waiting, we won't wait till then![]()
I was intended to reply to this and got side tracked. You know how easy that is for us old folkIt didn't bother me at all and to prove that I gave up on them. If it were something worth posting, I still would. Some threads here are starting to sound like the AMDZone. My putting them on the ignore list doesn't solve anything.
It was just by luck that i have an E4500, if not i'd be on my Athlon 64 3000+I'm curious about 1160 prices/models.

Apparently the cheapest Nehalem at launch (2.66GHz model) will cost around $300.
All the Q4 models will be Bloomfield platform based, ie X58 1366 socket. The mainstream chips won't be till next year.
the mainstream chips won't have QPI and triple channel DDR3 right? only dual?

yup for Lynnfield and Auberndale, only Bloomfield and Gainstown get fancy, but if anything, the QPI on Bloomfield is just another possible bottleneck between the cpu and graphics+I/O. It doesn't , but this is just an example of why the Bloomfield platform was specifically targeted for the high end users who want dual graphics and the ability to tweak where the Lynnfield platform is much much more sensible for business and home users who would use quad core cpu power.

so if nehalem does launch in 6 weeks.
Major memory manufacturers better start
a) dropping prices faster cause DDR3 is still pretty expensive compared to DDR2.
b) Start releasing registered DDR3. I couldn't find any.
You only need DDR1333, so probably you should be looking lower in the rung than DDR3 2000
Registered will not be necessary except on servers.
I found this on some random forum...dont know whether you have seen it yet and i cant figure out how to translate it but nehalem will have $284$562
and $999 price points

2.93GHZ here I come
Extreme same time appearances and 2.93GHz effect 2.66GHz Bloomfield unit costs USD $562 pulses at USD $284.
