I tried both ways, .....if you are prepared to shave about 2mm off the edge of the CT-479 it will actually get into the socket with the frame removed. But I wasn't about to try doing that given the nil chance of it working without BIOS hacks anyway

I'm sure with a BIOS update Asus could get it to work.
It sounds like the same problems i got with the Asus P4S800-MX. Asus should have no problems making a BIOS that would get Windows working.

Updated the list with the P4S800D-E.

    Get more boards tested guys!

I tested some of my Socket 478 boards today, but no success......
    Not working:
MSI 875P Neo-LSR: i875P, latest BIOS (2.4) => no post (tested by mahrhofer)
had to remove the retention module first to plug CT-479 into the socket
SOLTEK SL-85DR3: i845PE, latest BIOS (AQ2) => no post (tested by mahrhofer)

Will test other boards next weekend, stay tuned!

i know that copying microcode would help motherboard to properly recognize cpu, but will a simple insert help to boot with it?

    Guys ,

if some MoBo POSTs, to test WIN loading use this instead :

    http://users.volja.net/image/Files/ResQsys.htm

If with this works, MoBo works & IMHO just needs reinstalling your main WIN setup !!! (if previously did not wanted to run your /probably/ WinXP setup)

    @ Kamerat :

Ps.:test some boards again if possible with that stuff linked!

If some non-compatible MoBo does not wanna post, maybe is time to check, what are phisical differences on connections back on MoBo socket regarding the other supported MoBo; may be some pin left off not soldered/connected, so can not have post! Same problem I had with my generic slotket modded to accomodate Tuallie times ago, shorting back on it two neighbor pin did the trick; maybe something similar & easy could resolve this non-booting problem on some first non-Post-ing MoBo. IMHO its worth a try to check once again!

My posts @ Dothan overclocking thread, first one with some not quite accurate statements, but others IMHO Ok! Resolving certain problems! Mods!

    Kamerat,

Which BIOS version did the P4S800-MX board have that you tested the Celeron-M on? I have a p4S800-MX but it doesn't POST with a celeron-M. I can't get the board to flash to its newest BIOS either, so there might be something wrong with it anyway. But it would help to know this.

    [edit]
I got a replace motherboard, the P4S800-MX SE (same chipset, only with SATA controller). I updated it to the most recent BIOS, but no go on this one either!
I haven't tested the Celeron-M 350 in an officially support mobo yet, so I'm throwing a P4P800SE at it right now, to see if it actually works..

    [edit2]
Yup, it works on the P4P800SE. Even with the sense pin missing on the adapter, which I found out later. I can't rule out that that was the cause of the CPU not working on those other motherboards.

Has anyone tried a shuttle mobo on 478 to see if it'd work?

Just curious, seems a good candidate for shuttle format if a working mobo could be found...I've never really worked a shuttle but with a mod or 2 it's a pretty low wattage chip.

    Used the 1010 BIOS.

    Thanks for that information.

My board had BIOS revision 1002, which isn't even listed at the Asus website. I think someone force-flashed the wrong bios in it.

Anyway, the P4S800-MX SE doesn't POST even with the newest BIOS. A shame really, because it would make a dirt cheap and still decently modern setup. I thought at first it would be the same as the P4S800-MX with the added SATA controller, but the board layout is rather different. The only thing in common is the SIS chipset.

Sorry that it took so much time to make another contribution......

Tested some other Socket 478 boards today => no success.
    Not working:
ASROCK P4i65GV: i865GV, latest BIOS (1.90) => no post (tested by mahrhofer)
ASROCK P4 Combo: i848P, latest BIOS (1.6) => no post (tested by mahrhofer)

It seems that the BIOS core which is used by ASROCK does not include the necessary microcode for Pentium M/Cekeron M CPUs.

I'll try to test more boards next week, especially ASUS P4P800S for olDirdey
(the machine belongs to my nephew, I don't have access to this PC normally).

    How old is *real old*?
I have one SOLTEK 845E board and two 845PE boards (EPOX, SOLTEK) left over to test. I'll try tonight, maybe I'm lucky this time.... :-)

You got that right, real old as in first generation S478 boards with i850 and i845 chipsets.
