X800 Pro PCI-e: no unlockable pipes?

I've seen some pretty killer deals on X800 Pro PCI-e cards lately, but I'm also hearing something about a laser cut trace that prevents these cards from having their 4 pipelines recovered.

Is this true? Has anyone bought one of these cards and tried flashing it?

no, you cannot unlock newer x800pro pci-e unfortunately . Better go for a x850xt, they've reached pretty reasonable price now.

whats the deal with these x850 pros? are they 12 or 16 pipes, i get conflicting info everywhere, if 12 are they unlockable to 16?

Hmm has the been confirmed accross all brands, for the reference design and non reference design cards? Not sure if the actual pcb has anything to do with the pipes..

Erad, PCB has nothing to do with the pipes (unless I'm really wrong). The pipes are in the 'core' which all come from ATI

Actually ATI's partners dont have the ability to alter the core and no. of pipes. They merely test, brand, package, and distribute them on their own pcbs with their own set of ram. However, it is more likely that an ATI reference design is unlockable rather than the partner's own design. For example, when the X700 series was released, there was a chance you'd get an X700 PRO with an XT core when it first hit retail; heck there even X700XTs u could actually buy back then. But the chips proved too costly to produce and the yields were too rare on the platform for it to be mass-produced so the PRO took center stage. Mainly cos the 6600GT/6600 was threatening to take back the ground ATI had gained with the 9600s in the mainstream. So the immediacy of the situation meant lots of genericly similar X700XTs were produced though utimately cancelled. (Interestingly enough, some of the early reviews of the PRO were using the Xt core )

Hopefully the RV530 (sounds like a bmw lol) or whatever else ATI has in store for the next mainstream will take some of the market back

It'd be quite a disappointment if ATI didn't, they will be new generation, 90nm process, sm3, wgf1 and all that. Hell, a 6600GT beats an 9800XT if you remember. Just hoping yields will be good.

Very true, a 9800XT is still a very good card and its merely the GTs higher clocks that are helping it, not the GTs architecture that makes it a "better card". Heck if the XT could clock to 500 core and 600 mem, ATI wouldnt even need the X700.

I don;t think that the mem is a problem as the 9800XT is on a 256 bit bus and the 6600GT is on a 128 bit bus. But an extra 88mhz on the core wouldn't hurt

Done it with succes on a ASUS Extreme X800Pro ViVo. No lasercut . Used ASUS X800XT 1.6ns bios. Questions is if this card uses the same core as a true X800?
