New Gskill Pc4800 La @ddr660 1t

GSKILL is doing great business lately with hard-core memory solutions. First the PC4400 1GB/512MB modules based on the famous Samsung TCCD chips and now the PC4800 series.

The PC4800 is build with the new revision Samsung TCCD 440 cycle chips. These chips yield better speeds to achieve the PC4800 (DDR600) in Dual and single channel mode.
Soon the 1GB PC4800 modules will also be released by GSKILL.

The "possible" improvements:

- More flexibility with higher voltages. (range 2.5 ~ 3.0v)
- Better yields, lower voltage at rated speeds, means higher overclock capability
- Works better with CAS2.0

Enough intro, let's show the pics 8) :

The package:


Test system

- Athlon 64 3400+ Newcastle (week 34)
- DFI Lanparty UT 250GB rev1.0
- 2x 256MB Gskill PC4800 LA

Unfortunatly I still do not own a Dual channel S939 platform. At the beginning of next year the MSI Nforce4 board will arrive at my doorstep, so I have to it with the DFI for now.
Like most of the people already know, testing TWO dimms on DFI with S754 memcontroller is a shot in the neck.
I could not get 2 dimms working, even at default rating speeds/settings. I don't know why, cause I got it work on my 2x 512MB GSKILL modules.

Anyway, one dimm is the only way to test these modules.

The Benchmarks

First I tested both modules seperatly to look what those babies can do.

Module 1 (marked with a one):



Module 2:



DDR600 2.5-3-3-6 1T 2.6V (module 1)



Piece of cake for this ram, who needs 2.5-4-4-8 :*)

DDR640 2.5-3-3-6 1T 2.9v (module 1)



No sweat, now you see the improvements of Samsung 440, it's reacting well with higher voltages.

DDR660 2.5-3-3-6 1T 3.0v (module 1)



Again, 3.0v works on the TCCD!

This is even stable in memtest86++ _/-\o_

DDR640 2.5-3-3-6 1T 3.0v (module 2)

The other module (2) performed a little bit lower than module 1, logic it would be very lucky to get two modules perform the same.

Unfortunatly this module does not respond well with 2.5-3-3-6 1T @DDR640. At DDR600 ~ 620 it barely run well with these timings.

With 2.5-4-3-6 1T 2.9v it run fine, Trcd 4 instead of 3 is about 20~25MHz loss.



Conclusion

This ram is definitly tha bomb! :7 Can do very high speeds, even higher when losing some timings.
It can also run on 2-2-2-5 timings with lower speeds (200-240MHz*)

Pros

- Very very cheap, around $130-150
- Contains new revision Samsung TCCD
- Clocks like hell

- Still does not work well with two dimms on S754 platform.

Have you tried DQS Skew of +64 and +128 with 2 sticks? Or anything else?

Also tryed any different drive strengths?

Can make ALOT of difference.

I tryed everything with the Skew, nogo. It is the memory controller or the board that is holding me back.

And why isn't it interesting? 2x256 is still the best solution with benchmarking, you should know.

Testing one module give a idea how your ram performs. And this the 512LA kit.

i disagree, the only thing i benifit by from having 2x512 is smoother windows peroformance, i dont gain or lose fps from only having 512, so unless im missing something or playing the wrong games...

Thats true!

You dont have more fps with 2x512 then 2x256 but loading games and performance in games and closing games you will see the differentiated!

will you have 2x512 you never want back to 2x256

Yes, you're playing the wrong games.

Unreal Tournament 2004 loads up and has to page file if you have 512K. Talk about slow loads. You'll be killed twice when you spawn into online games before you are able to defend yourself.

1024 totally changed my UT 2004 game experience.

the euro stores in norway i think, and germany maybe the other one, have it listed for 2-3rd weeks of jan for stocks. 256 sticks though, i think, my euro language skills apart from english aren't the greatest.

Well,
It doesn't look that good at all.
I probably have a crappy mem controller, cpu clocks good though.

Did some early testing with my 2 sticks, using the Neo2 with modded 1.41 bios.
When setting everything at AUTO in the bios, OCZ Memtest detects them as 2.5-4-4-8, just like the package says.

Of course, I tried to run them as fast as possible, hoping I'd be able to run them at 275Mhz, 2.5-3-3-7 at least, maybe a little more.

The max I could run them at 2.5-3-3-7 was 262Mhz, whithout getting any errors. Everything above that gave me errors at the end of test #5.

275Mhz seemed OK, but only with timings at AUTO e.g. 2.5-4-4-8.
300Mhz looked ok too, BUT only with 2T setting. 1T would instantly give me thousands of errors.

I'll try to do some more testing tomorrow, as it is to early to call them bad.
I'll also give them a try on the DFI Ut250Gb.


262Mhz, 2.5-7-3-3, 1T :

Yeah - I'm curious, too. Maybe Onepagebook can answer this. Are the RAM chips on the LA's the the same as on the LE's like mine below? I know some have TCCD 440. I'm lost.
